I have found a domain name that is currently in the redemption period for more than 2 months. How is that possible? The redemption period lasts for a maximum of 30 days, doesn't it?

The whois shows "On-hold (redemption Period)" status.

When can I expect the domain to be deleted?

To answer that question we really need to know where it is registered and which tld.

Thanks guys. It's a .com and the registrar is Enom.

Could I still get the domain if I backorder it now?

I think it takes 75 days to drop after the expiration date??

OK, I think I will backorder it. However, isn't it too late to backorder a domain if it already is in the redemtion period?

Enom is kinda special case. They always register the domain for another year even if the owner doesn't renew. They usually then just sit on it and taste it, until it expires. They have recently signed up with SnapNames to auction off their domains. It's not clear on their policy of when they release the domain to Snapnames; after the original expiry or after the renewal expiry or somewhere in between. So my advice would be to get on over to SnapNames right away and place a backorder on it.

What's the whole point in doing so? How do they benefit from doing this act?
