Domain hacks

Is there a general consensus on domain hacks? Do most of you stay away from them? Are they generally considered to be novelties and not very desirable?

I know a domain is only worth what someone is wiling to pay for it but what is the general attitude toward hacks?

I was never too keen on domain hacks. They may be a little easier to remember but I would try and get a .com over a weird extention simple because people will always think ".com"
