Life is so unfair, why couldn't I be addicted to developing my domains instead of finding more to buy?! :hehe:

I'm sure I'm not the only one, so I'll start this impromptu little support group:

"Hi, my name is Derek, and I'm a domain buying addict".

That's step 1 out of the way...

 ..I think it's the rush i get from a good snag and reg..I dunno...But the feeling is to awesome to ever stop.

Hi my name is Midnight and I am also domain name addict.

I am also still on the cigs, so I guess have two addictions.

1 patch for each arm.

That is so true. I buy almost every single one of my domains thinking, "Oh, what a nice name to develop!" I only end up developing about 25% of them... :D

Sweeter words, a registrar has never heard spoken.

For those afflicted, this is an insiduous problem. Habit forming is an understatement- *extremely* addictive hits closer to the mark. Thank goodness that only a, relatively, small portion of the population is effected! Writers, wordsmiths, cross-word puzzle and "Jumble" buffs, as well as, vanity license plate namers are, particularly, vulnerable.

There are different levels of addiction and several differnt types of addict.

The disease starts out, innocently, enough. Typically, our would be addict enters a registrars site for the first time and amidst the glittering pixels filled with promises, hope and specials rests, nestled, a small white box and, enblazoned, by it's side are words, such as, "Find It", "Search Here", "Find Your Name", Search for Your Domain, Now!", "You Can Have Your Own Website!" or "Join Millions of Others and Tap Into The World's Fastest Growing Industry." Our unsuspecting victim types in a name. After a moment, a page comes up with the word "Taken" next to a long list of extentions, except for one that appears to have a string of abbreviations and dots behind it. Our future domainer has only noticed .com, .net and .org before- mostly, .com, (which he settles on), so undeterred he types in another name, only to end up with the same results. Thinking it odd, that someone else has actually, registered the name before him, (after all, "this is *me* we're talking about.") he types in another name. !00 attempts later, the words "Congratulations! appears next to his name of choice and he knows he has hit the motherlode. He works his way, frantically, through pages of check-out offers, hoping that no one else will register his gem before he does. With check-out complete, he gives a sigh of relief. He has registered his first domain. He is now the proud owner of, "i-needserioushelp-now.com". He finds the entire experience to be so stimulating that he repeats it, at first, including .net and eventually adding on some of those names with the strange string of initials behind them. He, finally, quits after the message, "We've Experienced A Problem. Your Credit Card Company Declined Payment for Your Order".

He googles to find a place to go where he can have the value of his names appraised. He clicks on a link to "Free Domain Name Appraisals" lands at NamePros and, thus, begins his new life. :)

In part II of this report, I will be discussing the various types of domain addict, ranging from the
casual. "a name here a name there". user to the hardcore junkie who needs to mainline his fix by performing, daily, 100,000 name searches, using the latest in software technology.

Hello, my name is Kimberly and I’m a domain name addict.

I started using about 20 months ago. I started using recreationally but noticed that I had been binging at times, registering as many as 30 names in a day, selling a few in an effort to prove I wasn’t addicted but then I found Snapname.com (f*** Saggydimes). At that point the problem got worse, much worse.

Luckily for us the Eli Lilly Company is working on a medication for this illness. NameProzac (oooh, I just noticed nameprozac.com is still available – no I better not).

Best wishes and get better (get better names),
-Kimmy

names, and the registrar tells me it's available and I can't get to check out
fast enough and my heart is racing and my fingers are shaking and
I tremble as I'm just about to confirm and........
Damn, the server was down, all requested names are unavailable...

I'm not an addict. I can stop registering domains any time I want.

I did just rush off and register domainingaddict.com and dmainnameaddict.com though. Maybe a support group can be set up? ;) While I was regging those, I also managed to get a premium 3 character dictionary word dot com name. I wonder how much that could be worth? ;)

Well, I just typed in "premium3characterdictionaryword.com" and GoDaddy said it was available! I might auction it off on eBay - should get a few dollars for a genuine premium 3 character dictionary word dot com name. :)

Hi

My name is David and I am a domain name addict. I started innocently enough around 3 or 4 months ago before finding namepros and becoming hooked. Since then I have registered/bought a bit over 100 names and spend a few hours a day searching for more. I have a list of about 300 names which are available to register but am totally broke now and wondering how I'm even going to afford to re-register my existing names in 6 months+ time! :td:

But at least it motivates me to make more money to feed my domain name addiction. Hopefully I get a few sales in as I do not yet know the euphoric rush from making a profitable domain sale.

I too have also bought quite a few domains with the intention to develop but of course like others get hooked on the buying and don't put enough time into development.

In conclusion I think it is a necessity to start some sort of help group for all us sad cases. Maybe we need to advise the colleges/universities of our cases so they can plan some sort of training for upcoming shrinks to be able to help our group of people.

It is especially hard for me here in a small bush town in Australia as most people haven't even heard of a domain name so they think I'm totally mad and talking another language if I try to explain anything about the industry!

Well I look forward to meeting more addicts and warn anyone thinking they might buy a domain or two that it is very hard to stop there!

This question is for the more "mature" addict, (or for the immature addict out there who is a fast learner) and who performs mass searches w/ specialized software.
What is your preferred method of checking results?

1) Do you, anxiously, peer at the screen watching the results as they are unfold, in real time, name by name. :gl: (This is, commonly, referred to as the "Looky-Lu" or "Cheat and Peak" style.)
-or-
2) Are you more of a delayed, gratification type who likes to hold off and get one concentrated, rush after the search is complete. (There is no common definition for this, particular, search style, although, it's practitioners are, generally, acknowledged as being highly adept and skillful in the bedroom arts.) :red: :bingo: :hearts:

It should be noted that these are only broad descriptions of two very, general categories and oft times an addict cannot be neatly pidgen-holed into one or the other. In fact, so-called "mixing and matching" is the most common form of addiction. For example, there is a sub-category of addicts known as "Peeping Toms" who are "Looky Lu's" who, frequently, "Cheat and Peak" and who are, at the same time, masters of the bedroom arts. :tri: :tu:

PS "bedroom arts" refers to quilting, embroidery, crochet work, knitting and other arts and crafts projects for articles that are used in and associated with the bedroom. ie bedcovers, comforters, robes, etc. A double entendres or implied meaning other than this, is subject to your own interpretation and was not the express, written, intent of the author.

Hi. My Name is Noetic, and I'm an addict. I *was* clean and sober for 3 days, but then relapsed on a domain called Addicted.tv

Thanks for letting me share :P

Welcome, noetic. Good to see that you made good use of your relapse, IMHO. If you are going to jump off the wagon, you might as well make it worthwhile.

Anyone know what time the domain name Enduser chapter of the "Addicted on Buying" meeting is? The location would be helpful, as well. Thanks.

You'll be happy to know there IS a patch. It's a little tricky to apply though, but here are directions.

1. Get your last credit card bill (you know, the one your spouse doesn't see).
2. Find the grand total at the bottom and cut out a 1.5" square around it (15mm if not in the US).
3. Grab your kids school glue (unless you sold your kids to buy more domains), and liberally apply to the back of the paper square you cut out.
4. Stick the squre to the inside of your glasses facing your right eye. If you don't wear glasses, you soon will after staring at that monitor all night looking for the perfect domain.
5. If dizziness should occur, discontinue use and unplug your computer.

Warning, this patch is not approved by the FDA, the V1graaa-SeeAlice Pharmaceutical Board, Enom, or ICANN. Some users may continue to see symptoms and attempt to register names without a TLD. If applied incorrectly to the left eye, users may experience different symptoms of registering only crappy short domains. some users have been know to develop severe weight gain when they actually leave their computer to visit the kitchen. In extremely rare cases users have become delerious and had symptoms of typing domain names into their telephone. Consult doctor.md before discontinuing use or changing the dosage of the patch.
