Domain name addiction?

I found that I spend more and more time on buying domain names. I came to the conclusion that this thing is addictive. People warn you smoking or drinking will cause the addiction, but no one has warned me about domain name research being addictive. Last time I had the addiction problem was many years ago when Tetris was beginning to be popular, I had to erase the Tetris completely from my computer to stop playing.

Not that I have made money and rewarded from the domain, not yet. I have spent a lot more money buying real stocks with only a fraction of the time I have spent on the domain. Am I the only person? I just can't stop it.

first you get the name in your head and it won't go away, it looms large and taunts you, then you flaff about going through the registration process and get the heavy hit as the final pay reg button is pressed...and then you look at the name and it visibly goes grey and deflates in front of your lobes...need another hit....intellectual crack B-)

Yep.

And the thing is, it's our private stash too. ;)

Bear in mind that, unless you have an 'unlimited' budget, better put a cap on the # of domains for your portfolio so you don't run out of cash flow. Esp. if you don't have many in your traffic portfolio and you don't sell well. Most people may not be able to sell domain names in less than 1 year. It may take the 2nd year or further to sell for a nice figure. And that means money required to renew. If your ppc domain parking or affiliate program can cover the cost, OK. But many people can't continue. That's a major reason the expired domains market is so huge.

Before and after registering a domain, think about how you can make money with it. Registering a domain is easy, the challenge is how to 'moneytize' it soon. So, work on ppc domain parking and learn how to make money with affiliate programs (check out free info from websites like The Affiliate Classroom and Affiliate Advantage). It's not a hobby for most members here, I guess - it's business. A system is required to make your domains pay.

In short, turn your addiction from registering domain names to making money with domain names.

Hope it helps.

good advice.

I now have a good control on my domain purchases. My addition is now on the development. I am spending time on development. I find that I spend even more time on the development +:). I can never stop thinking how to improve the websites +:).

Domaining is fun and cool, and can be profitable if it's treated with real discipline, but the real money will also be in development. Content is king!

Well said, cy. It's amazing how you can turn any non-descript name with zero type-in to generate hundreds, thousands, of uniques per day with the right development.

Valuable and profitable traffic (the real type) can be created in abundance, and not just because a name has "high Ovt" or "natural type-in" for ".COM". The overexaggeration of the value of the later has caused prices to be artificially blown out of proportion, and probably causing a lot of buyer remorse when they discover that "curious traffic" converts dismally.

at first it's addicting, when you've been around for a while you calm down and do a little more planning when it comes to registrations and domain name management :) We've all had the "addictive" feeling though!!
