I see a lot of people every day trying to develop out their domains into some sort of functional websites... That is really great, but ask yourself first "for what" ??? What for are you developing? I guess the answer is in order to make more money obviously by teaming up directly with affiliates, selling advertising to companies who you may want to approach, increasing traffic from the search engines, etc. OK, great, but who are you developing for exactly? Do you know the demographic of visitors?? Do you know the advertisers?! Is there even any advertisers to reach out to?
Let me tell you... I see many people trying to develop domain names that absolutely make no sense. I just don't get it. People developing domain names that have no advertisers interested in that type of traffic... Domains that will never pull in enough organic search engine traffic either in order to justify the domain development costs because there is nobody interested in the type of information / services that are covered on the website. I've wrote many times over and over again and I cannot stress this enough --- you really need to do the proper research before you decide to develop.
Ok, so just because you got a domain name... You feel like you need to develop it, because right now it is just going there to waste.. Not receiving any traffic, so obviously no money from domain parking or whatever and there isn't any offers coming in to buy it... So surely once I develop it things will change... Or will they? No! This is not always the case. You have to do the research first. Developing websites does not mean that automatically there will be all this money pouring in overnight from all this traffic that will magically appear from the search engines and users flocking to your new site.
Look, development is not for everybody... You have to be serious. You have to be committed. You have to know what the stakes are. It all starts with research. If you are unable to do the proper research and determine everything that has to do with running a website you want to develop, you cannot begin. If you choose to skip the research part, you are shooting yourself in the foot. You are going in on a niche that you do not fully understand. This is a recipe for a major disaster. Waste of time and money. Odds aren't in your favor. So why not take the time and research whatever it is you want to get in on... And once you have compiled all the necessary research --- you sit down, go over all your notes and then make a decision.
I don't think most people understand that development is not for all domains. Development is for domains that have a purpose. Domains that provide useful information. If there is already 100 sites about subject XYZ and you decide to build out another website... Is it really necessary? What is the point? Are you going to open a pizza restaurant in a shopping plaza where there is already 5 restaurants and a pizza place? Seriously, ask yourself this questions.. Does it make sense? By doing research, you are learning about your competition and creating a plan and vision. You need to have this information. Without it, you are setting yourself up for big time failure which you will only see first hand month's down the road... When it's too late.
Development in general is all about providing a product/service or certain information on a topic in which there is interest in by both users and advertisers. If you have good keyword domains, setting up websites on them should be easy as those keywords identify and are directly tied up with a topic. If your domains are part of a niche such as "travel" for example, and more specifically the keywords within your domain deal with lets say "miami florida" then obviously there should be advertisers interested in appearing on the website and/or acquiring that type of traffic. If your website is about something very generic, it may not be so... Lets say you have a very good domain about museums, energy or horses. Too broad... Not going to work.
I personally develop websites strictly in niches that I am familiar with. I've been doing this for many years. Niches that I already know everything about. Niches where I stay on top of things. Niches that I am committed to. What are your niches? Do you have one?? If you don't, you need to find one. Do not try to be all over the place in a million niches and trying to take over the world. This is impossible. Pick five or six at most and focus on them. You need to educate yourself and learn all about them. This will make the development process all that much simpler. You will know what advertising and monetization options exist. What works and what doesn't. You will be able to measure the traffic and potential of websites as well.
Development is not done overnight. Development is an on-going process. It takes a lot of time and money too. You can however get your upfront investment in the first few month's if you do everything right. Google will start sending you traffic within the first few weeks as you launch the site. Yahoo will begin to send traffic as well a month or two down the road. Development is very exciting and profitable because there is organic growth involved, which means that the potential is really unlimited. As long as you put in the work, the potential for growth is alive and well... You better your site, you better the chances at better rankings and more traffic.
You need to develop a few dozen websites in a network setup. The few websites that take off, shift your focus to them, and you will see... That it's where the money is. If you only have one or two or five active websites, you may be stuck waiting for those few websites to take off... But what if they never will? It is always a possibility. So, if you want to increase your chances at getting a few "winner" sites you need to develop a lot of them. Minimum investment, minimum commitment... Lottery style. You set it up and let time do it's thing. Do not be stubborn and try to do just one or two sites... Do a few dozen. This is where the real money is. This is what all the smart search engine marketers do and have been doing since day one of the internet.
Some of the most successful Real Estate investors buy up multiple commercial properties all over any given city/county/state for example... They don't just focus on one little residential area project or office buildings. They are all over the place, diversified quiet well. They also make some pretty risky investments that pay off down the road in a couple of years almost nine times out of ten. Some of the most successful Real Estate Developers build housing all over the place as well and not just in one city or state. Some of their "ventures" do well in certain areas while some don't... Most of them are successful though because once they do the proper research over time and make the commitment... They carry through with everything that needs to put them in the position for meeting their goals according to a master plan.
As a domain developer, you need to pick out the best keyword domain names that make sense developing... You develop them properly by setting up relevant content on properly optimized websites and let time do it's thing. You do not have to wait years... It only takes a few month's to begin to make sense of things. On the internet things are moving at a much more rapid and faster pace than offline. Take advantage of this. Launch dozens of websites. Heck, launch hundreds and thousands if you can. I have...and it's the best business decision I have ever made and continue to make each and every day. It is all about creating a vision and following through with it. Don't just gamble randomly on a bunch of domains which is risky... Play odds in your favor by setting up lots of websites and go in on niches where there isn't that much competition either. It's easy once you get to it... Give it a try.
