You need to buy domains people want and are prepared to pay for. You really should be targeting a commercial audience. Short names are good if you bear the aforementioned in mind. Really only .com domains are worth investing in for noobs/experts.

Majorly it depends upon the end user really. There are some domains now going for thousands and you cant even pronounce them or they are chinese or french word domains. You can target specific niche market and register domains pertaining to your target market. Good keyword search domain name is also good. Some ccTLD's are popular but they are sort of only restricted to their geographical location.
