If in doubt, let him make the first offer. If he's interested enough he's probably had some thought about it at some point in time. You on the other hand, you can sit back and relax and let him come, he wants something that you own, thus you're sitting on the more comfortable chair.
I'd post the domain for appraisal in the Appraisal Thread and you should get very usable statements. However, even though you may get opinions, i'd still let the guy that called make the first step to even gauge where he stands. If he's low balling, you can always fall back on the appraisals here. Once you have numbers, call him back, tell him that you might be intrigued to sell the domain and ask what number he has in mind, then you can take it from there.

this would be my way to go about it, others may have a different opinion, ultimately, you should proceed in a fashion that makes you feel comfortable and where you can look yourself in the mirror the next day.

First of all, congratulations on the inquiry. This is a bit of a tricky situation since there is not a lot of historical data on sales of .sc domains. Here's a list of sales taken from NameBio.com (thanks Justin):

flight.sc $125
erotica.sc $210
myrtlebeach.sc $7,000
erotic.sc $206
Hotel.sc $245
Casino.sc $3,392
usc.sc $250

Also, a member of NP has some strong keyword .sc's for sale at $1000 and above (up to $8000) and, IMHO, they are all reasonably priced. You might check out his thread to see the specifics. (Search the high-priced sales forum to find the thread.)

Since the offer was unsolicited, it absolutely makes sense and is appropriate to suggest/demand that the prospective buyer make the first offer.

Best of luck and keep us up to date on the negotiations.

Brad

Edit: It might be wise to remove the name of the domain from your OP. PM some of the great appraisers and vets of the forum with the specifics when seeking an appraisal.

No problem Brad! Just doing what I can. Also, I agree. Remove the domain name from the post with an edit, you'll be doing urself a favor. My response to inquiries is to always have the buyer make an initial offer. Also, assume that offer to not be the final one, because the anticipate a counter.

In all honesty, I think 1k is very reasonable for this domain sale. This ccTLD has yet to produce any kind of major sales (aside from those listed above and a few others).

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Justin

Interesting. Look at what they've already done. Something tells me they would have paid at least 5 times that amount. They own great .sc domains... they have a nice little network going..

Congrats on your sale!

Hmm, I'm just reading this now, but from the initial post, I was thinking South Carolina Directory... I agree, I probably would have asked $3,500 - $5k. I understand its an extension without history, but what else would someone want this domain for? And in that use, it's worth a lot more.

But hey, it's still a decent sale and you got a new computer, so I'm sure you're happy either way :)

Next time, if you're contacted by an end user like this, try to figure out what they'll probably do with it, and that will help you get a better idea of how much it's worth to them.

Congrats on your sale!

Ive sold this guy one or two .sc domains, some while ago i sold cars.sc to them for less than what youve sold directory.sc for, so well done.. :)

Ive also sold at least a dozen .sc domains for more than whats quoted as previous sales - but most were sold via the 1plus platform and we dont post any data on sales - so I guess they wouldnt be known generally..

Congrats in any respect..

What it does show people is that strong generic single words will sell for minimum 10 times your investment, whatever the extension...

including .mobi :p

$800 seems like a good price.
