I know this is a total newbie question, but I’ve noticed that domain auctions frequently list the domain’s expiration date. Why is the expiration date important in this context? Thanks.

Because the cost of renewal can add to the cost of purchase if the renewal date is near. This is something a buyer calculates when considering a purchase.

Okay, thanks. I only follow premium domains, where renewal costs are trivial relative to sale price.
