Do expired domains still keep their domain age if you register them after they've expired? I have been looking for an answer to that questions for awhile on this forum, but can't seem to find the answer.

No to put it simply

But if the domain hasn't expired, just changed registrars and owners, then it keeps the domain age?

Yes.

When a domain drops (is deleted) the creation date will be reset if it's registered again.
On the other hand there are expired names that are auctioned off by registrars, that will retain their age. Because they have not dropped. Those names are not expired technically, it's just that they are not renewed by the holder.

try to buy the domain direct from the owner before it expires or grab it from an auction house and you will retain age, backlinks and any pagerank, Matt Cutts from google has stated that they try to remove pagerank/links if domains drop as they feel the new owner should not benefit from a previous owners work, not saying they catch every domain and remove this but why take a chance grab it before it deletes if it does have age/pagerank/links.

The one point to be made on the Matt Cutts thing is that PR is not influenced by anything except total inbound links at the time of the new update.

If all the inbound links are left intact -- or even a significant number of the stronger links -- a site's PageRank will rebound. You have to wait until the next update, and hope that the owners of those dead links don't wake up and change them. But, truth is if a link is still left dead after the drop period, the odds are high it's going to remain dead for a long time after you register the domain.

PageRank does recover on the next update if the inbound links are still intact.

I don't remember his exact wording but it was along the lines of they try to reset pagerank after a drop occurs, could it rebound after an update sure. yummytork seems more concerned with domain age so he should definitely try to email the owner or grab from auction before it drops if that is important to him as we know for a fact domain age won't remain after a complete drop cycle.

Yes, thanks for the responses guys. I am more concerned with domain age, as Page Rank is useless to me. Although alot of people still put value on PR as some sort of valuator, I don't.

"put value on PR as some sort of valuator, I don't."

you should :)

I mean the PR that the toolbar shows, which is probably 4-6 months old anyway. PR as anything other than a guideline for valuing a site is pretty weak. But everyone has their opinions, although if Matt Cutts says don't put too much stock in it, then I usually don't.
