try to buy the domain direct from the owner before it expires or grab it from an auction house and you will retain age, backlinks and any pagerank, Matt Cutts from google has stated that they try to remove pagerank/links if domains drop as they feel the new owner should not benefit from a previous owners work, not saying they catch every domain and remove this but why take a chance grab it before it deletes if it does have age/pagerank/links.
