using whois (Creation Date)

I agree that if you are looking up a specific domain and want to see how old it currently is, nothing beats a look on the Creation Date of the whois. However, if the name has expired and dropped then you may want to consider web.archive.org...Looking through there will give you displays of any old websites that were on the domain.
