Received this email this morning. Something just doesn't smell right.
I have read about previous email scams and wanted some peoples expert opinion. I am very new to this game.

Thanks in advance:

Hello,

I'm interested in your domain name listed for sale. www.classy.us

Can you drop me your desired price?

If I can afford it I'll reply.

By the way, did you receive offers from other buyers?

I run a software development company. Selling & buying names is not my
main business. Just another way to invest money and make additional
income.

Please keep our correspondence confidential.

if it were me, I would respond using a free email account which I would check evrey couple of days for a week or two. Just go create on at hotmail or yahoo or something.

What would they be scamming you for? Your email address? they obviously already have it.

Appraisal scams are very common, where somebody expresses interest in a domain, then asks for a professional paid appraisal. They are affiliated with the appraisal company, and have no real interest in buying your name. They just want you to pay for an appraisal.

The specific case that KPR posted is a reversal of sorts. It's a guy trying to get people to order appraisals then do charge backs in order to damage the broker/appraisal firms. That person has a grudge against them, and tries to recruit others into his scheme.

If you read the other thread (and threads linked in it), you will understand.

This sounds like the same person.

You have to think he/she is having some success with this scam, otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it...
But at the same time, who receives an email like this and doesn't smell a rotten egg or at least Google the subject line...

Ya, I have received this email a couple of times. One time I did respond just to say what he would say, and then he never responded. :hehe:

I feel left out. I have almost 800 domains and have them listed in several high traffic places... but have yet to receive one of these! I'd love to 'play along' with one of these scammers. I'll just have to be patient I guess. LOL

Gene, he might use a "toughguy.net" email address but he knows better than to mess with New Yorkers. Especially ones confident enough to put their mug out there for the world to see. :)

I can't believe that it's your turn now cos I just turned her off today LOL! Tried to scare him/her into believing that Sedo had received lots of complaints and has reported the case to the FBI. And now the FBI is tracking the IP address of the sender and checking with his/her ISP.

To cut a long story short, I guess that didn't work :)

Ha totally right but these scam emails are becoming too common now and they are all the same so it is not that hard to detect anymore.

I received the same email a few days ago. I found it fishy for two reasons.

  1. Received: from chen.mtu.ru (chen.mtu.ru [195.34.34.232]) --- From Russia?
  2. Ph. D. President -- Shouldn't it be Dr. Sarah Ludwig, President? lol

Hmmmm, I wonder what are "Sarah's" intentions. Has anyone ever replied with an anon email? I agree that this scam definitely found minor success because it is so on-going. Just curious. Perhaps he/she is another appraisal scammer.

I've gotten the same thing 4 times this week....... persistant she is.... :D

If some of these people put as much time into a legit business as they do in their scams they could probably make a living....

Lol how true but unfortunely I think these people just automate everything so they could be sipping tea while they are spamming everyone and out of the 1,000s of emails they send 1 or 2 people bite.
