Does anyone remember namezero.com. When I was in middle school, I remember going to my dad's office and registering "NydusCanal.com" as my first real "domain name" for free. Then, i used some weird script to block the popups and the banner. Too bad that company went down under :'( :'( .

Btw for those who dont know: Namezero was a company that registered FREE domains for you, in return the domains were plastered with ads and popups.

Nope, I've never dealt with Namezero. In fact, I haven't heard of this company. But thanks to Archive.org, here's a quick flash back in what it seems to be its heyday:

Were the domains registered in your name with Namezero? Was there even the WHOIS registry then? I'm happy domains aren't $70 nowadays, but $70 is no matter now if you registered maybe a 2 letter .com back then. :hehe:

I remember Namezero - did not use it, but when they closed they sold of all their domains and I found one of my best domanis via Namepros back in 2000 got it for $20 if I am not wrong.

I remember them, regged on of my first domain with them.
Was a long time ago.
They would actually display banner ads in a frame at the bottom of the screen.
Some Javascript code or a clickable link with <a href="" target="_top"> was all it takes to make it disappear :hehe:

I remember...

I got a pair of domains for free but never used them.

When popup blockers started to largely spread their ad incomes vanished.
They started asking to all their members to buy their domains for peanuts.
I got 3 or 4 of these desesperate emails.

After silence.

I also registered my first domain at NameZero in 2000. For first year it was free, second year I had to pay $35 as renewal fee. Next year I sent a check of $70 for 2 years renewal, they cashed my check but didn't renew. So I transferred my domain out to PakHost.com

Yup - created a "college humor"-style site on namezero.
Had forgotten about them - interesting model that could be resurrected by someone other than hosts, no ;) ?

Yeah, I remember NameZero and it would be fun to resurrect the concept of giving out free domains on a large scale.

Apparently their business model wasn't sustainable as it was. The problem was probably with users who registered free domains and then didn't develop on them. That $7/yr cost has to be made up somehow. Perhaps as ad rates increase there will be opportunities like this again.

I had a few names there for awhile. The ad thing was kinda weird, but it was free. As I remember, took some work to get a couple of names out of there too. ahhh.. the old days.... :cy: Anyone also remember FreeDSL.com??
