Does anyone actually buy domains on eBay?

Just wondering if any NPers buy domains on eBay, as I spent another hour tonight looking at the listings. Many domains appear to be regged only a few days ago. Others are complete dross, like "bargoons4U-2day.com" (made up example, so as not to offend anyone, but this example is very close to reality). Others are so astronomically priced I needed a bit of a lie-down after reading the listing, like MRX.com asking $21 million for a one-year lease.

Has anyone here managed to wade through the listings and actually find something good and reasonable?

I have bought some domains on eBay before, and there can be good deals. But I found that it is not worth the time and effort overall.

No, there may be good deals to be had but it was too hard to effectively filter results last time I looked.

when i first started a few years ago, yea i did, grabbed a few nice ones, but as its become more and more popular, you get the ususal suspects on there selling total rubbish, but i guess you can still get the odd good one :)

the amount of junk domains that show up on ebay is up there. there seems to be a lot of domains there that fall under the "i (and only i) think that these domains i hand-reg'd are amazing! i can't believe no one else wants these!" category.

There are a group of sellers that sell decent domains from time to time. Several Great Domains have been purchased on eBay so once in a great while you can find a gem on eBay!

I have bought a couple. I don't regularly search over there, but when I have a few minutes I go and browse the selection. I don't know how some of those guys make a profit. They pay $7.50, pay listing price, then sell a domain for $1.09 or don't sell it at all. When they do actually have a decent domain, it usually tops out at $29.

The reports above are definitely true though. Hard to efficiently search through, but there are some good/great deals every now and then.

Some recent ones:

Vacro.com was at $4.70 with a few hours left the other day. Fresh register or not, that isn't a bad name.

BuyAPlayer.com went for $1.06. I had bid the obligatory 99c, but came back and someone one upped me.

These were in the last 10 days. The way I look at it is some of these guys are doing all the hard work and I can come in and get a domain with about 360 days on it for $1.50 if I like it.

Of course, buying on eBay is always an option.

I sell domains and other items on Ebay so I will search the listings that are ending soon almost every day. I have picked up quite a few good names at a low price.

Although, if I wasn't already on Ebay I wouldn't bother.

You definitely have to sift througha bunch of crap. However, I have bought a few names on eBay that seem to be decent. I've only been buying from there for a few months, but I've already flipped a one for a respectable profit and pulled in some parking and Adsense revenues from others.

ebay is an okay place to buy domains. For one thing, if you find a "true auction", meaing one that doesn't have a ridiculously high reserve or starting price, the final price is likely to be cheap. I have sold quite a few names on ebay, and have found that no matter how good the domains you are selling, they will sell for practically nothing on ebay...less than what you would get even on the forums anyway.

Also, you have to scour through a ton of crap to find a decent domain. Some of the domains on there and sales pitches are so nutty, it just sucks to sift through.

But the big thing is that a lot of stolen domains are sold on ebay. If you see a great name going for a low price, make sure you verify that it has not been stolen. This is a difficult problem, because you have to investigate it on your own since you don't want to alert other domainers to the auction where they might potentially outbid you.

Ebay is a buyers market imho.

indeed you can find some great deals on ebay, not only for domains but pretty much with everything. It is like going to car boot fairs: you go through loads of dust and junk and after 2 hours you find for a dollar that ultra rare Deep Purple (random pick) vinyl, Mexical press witch has a market value of $300!
As mentioned above, one can find quite a few domains for less than $9.99. From a seller's point of view, ebay is good to get rid off domains you no longer need.

I used to filter through it all and pick up a few decent names here and there for decent prices. But it has been a while - and as you said , Many aren't worth looking at now.

There are a few sites that filter out much of the junk stuff - I think freshdrop.net was one and there were others I can't think of ATM. Of course Domains listed on those type sites get more attention and may not end up being as great a deal in the end.

HI

It takes to long... and the time you spend will not really pay off.. all I scan for... is domains ending in a few days.. and only look at the ones that have bids on them... let other people find and bid on the good domains.. and if they are still low and i like the domain I may put in a bid..

I guess this works on most auction platforms..

Thx
Tom

We used to buy a few domains from Ebay but I didn't like it when they changed to hidden bidders. For a while we continued to look but now we only really use Ebay occasionally for very low cost non-domain things.

Ever since that 2.0 article came out a couple years ago >:( , the quality of names on ebay has gone to pot! Used to be able to get some good names at cheap prices. Now it's all cheap names for stupid prices, and 'lots' of junk!! Ahhhh, the good ole days..!!

I'd like to see how a really good domain would do on ebay. That would really be a benchmark as to wether there were any really serious buyers perusing the sales.

I did consider putting a decent one of mine on there in the featured first showcase with a reserve, but the $81.70 price tag put me off. D-:
