Does ANYBODY actually use .US domains?

I've seen lots of people buying and selling .US domains... but does anybody actually use them???

Same goes for .mobi

Is the domain selling industry actually in touch with what people think? Does anybody recognize .mobi as anything but silly sounding?

the public doesnt know that .us exists even though its been out for years and you would most likely lose traffic to the .com so I dont use my .us names. I think .mobi is different though and I wouldnt mind developing those. Also, .us is mainly just for the U.S. and not a global tld like mobi and com.

I used to have a big proxy on .us, but I forwarded the traffic to a .in which I think has a cooler name.

Neustar is in the developmental stages of the worldโ€™s largest, zip code based, local search engine portal.

Approximately 44,000 five digit numerical zip code values were retained by Neustar, the .US registrar for the development of this project.
Currently, if you type your zip code into a browser followed by the .US extension you will find geographically specific information for the surrounding area.

Today however, Neustar appears to be severely behind in their agreement with the US Department of Commerce, who they initially contracted with. The agreement calls for completion of the search engine by June of 2006 http://www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/domainname/usca/usamend0015_10122005.pdf (Section 3, paragraph 3).

As one of the conditions to advertise on the zipcode.US search engine, businesses are required to have a .US extension for their website.

With the recent increase of .US sales, coupled with the "hopefully" soon completion of the zipcode.US search engine, I think that the .US extension will not only gain in popularity, but surpass other ccTDLs. :gl:

I don't really see many .us around. I see 10x more .tv around than .us. If it weren't for my own developed .us site (which is going away soon) then I wouldn't even know or care about .us.

I have bought them on a discount at GD but most of the time I can't even dump them for the same. Maybe it's my inability to pick good names, but I think the extension has a great deal to do with it too. Just look how it got whooped at the traffic auction by mobi...

I am no fan of .us but I certainly don't blame people for making a go of it.

Very nice. Wonderful keyword, nice site. Exemplary use of the .us cctld. Well done.

Here's one more reason to go .us: Google gives higher scores to local cctlds for searches done from ip addresses within the geographic area of that cctld.

If you search for food in germany, food.de will likely be listed higher in the SERPS than food.com. I don't know for a fact whether this is currently true with .us, but I suspect .us domains get a higher score than .info, .biz etc, while probably not higher than .com

As Virusdetails.com here said "think local" - he is spot on: the Internet is going local, and locality-oriented name and website value is increasing rapidly.

That .us is a local tld and not global like .biz, .info etc, is not really relevant. It's by far the biggest market area, leading world economy and probably accounts for >80% of internet commerce, if not more. Use the locality to your advantage, develop .us domains for Americans, .de domains for Germans, and success will come.

I will be really surprised if .us does not become the #2 tld right after .com within the next 3-5 years.

Cheers
Josh

i won't, lol
especially as it is a cctld.
it has potential of course , but has a LONG way to go to catch up with other cctlds like .de & .co.uk.
