Has anyone ever heard of the .US local requirements ever actually being enforced? I'm going through a bunch of LLL.us just to see who owns what and maybe 25% of them actually have an address in the US. Guessing they don't care about it too much - how about other ccTLDs?

Yes - they conduct spot checks every so often and require proof of eligibility or the name will be cancelled.

Just because the address isn't in the states doesn't mean the person isn't meeting the requirements. How do I know this? I live in Canada and I am a US citizen.

I also heard some non-US people got names deleted. You don't meet the requirement but you keep regging them, you are breaking the rules. :td:

I am very surprised they caught you in the first place, unless you were making some kind of trouble. It costs them money to check out domain owners, and more money in lost reg fees. Now if the domain was worth a lot of money they might be much more interested.

I guess I am a cynic.

Other TLD's vary greatly. I have heard that France is very strict. And of course some CC TLDs invite everyone to buy their names.

Ya, but they have to check according to the argeement (or some sort of that) signed with the government or bureau controlling the Internet for a certain region.

Well I just register some of them for fun. Mostly "An anime title".us or "Some funny name".us;
France is not strict imho, coz I got none deleted by them. But CAiRC caught my every single registrations (they are really good at catching me!).

I think it depends on the registrar, some don't bother with it. One thing to note though, is that once you own it, it's difficult for someone to dispute it. They have to pay $700 to file a claim and then even if they prove you have no legitimate connection to the US, you're still given time to create a legitimate connection... If you fail at that, then the domain drops back into circulation. The original claimant and the one who paid $700 does NOT get the domain, so why would anyone ever file a claim?
