Does a domain name become avalilable as soon as you cancel it?

hey guys, quick question, I have a domain at name.com and want to transfer it to godaddy but I don't want to wait 5 to 7 days for the transfer to be completed, so I was wondering if a canceled name became available as soon as it was canceled so I can do that and then register it with godaddy, I know it's cheaper to transfer it but the difference is only a couple of dollars, oh and the domain name is not popular or anything so I dont worry about somebody else taking it before I register with godaddy. Thanks!

If you really think no one's interested, then wait for the domain name to lapse
with Name.com (read their deletion policy, if any), 30 days redemption, then 5
days pending delete, then available. Given the times, though, that's risky and
poses no guarantees of getting the desired result.

But shorthand, it won't be available immediately after expiring.

That would be the safest thing to do IMO.
