I have just made a post in vBulletins suggestion and feedback area, here it is:

Hello,

IMHO, you guys should code some sort of instant chat initiation so that members could initiate instant chat sessions with any members. Once the member initiates a chat on another member of the forum, an instant messaging chat popup window comes up and they can begin chatting.

This is very useful in many forums as sometimes some people IGNORE pm's and posts from other users so the only way i see possible to contact them is through this type of instant messaging thing. :D

I believe it's a great idea and it would be very useful for lots of people.. especially forums where people sell and buy things where communication between the buyer and seller are vital

If this idea has already been posted, i'm sorry

If it hasn't, please tell me what you think about my idea

What do you guys think about that idea for vBulletin? Do you think it would be of any use? :lol:

I am warey of 'chat' on my forum because posts would go way down - perhaps 10% forum posts, 90% people just chatting.

There's a hack called "bb|messenger", at least that's what I used to be called. I'm not as "in" with vBulletin as I used to be, but I know there are hacks that do similar stuff.

I think it could work, but as already stated, the posts would go down. At a forum where I am a moderator at, we installed a Shout Box, and you wouldn't believe how much the posting went down. Instead of posting in the forum, people just talked in the shout box, but then their conversations got deleted, and people would talk about the same thing, over and over and over again. I think it would work if you don't mind posts going down.

You will also need to put in a bit to allow users to turn the chat off, not everyone wants to be bothered while posting on a forum, hence wh ythe ignore pm's. Pm's are ignored for a reason, popping up a chat will annoy people so they must be able to turn it off.
