Do Whois servers block IPs that make too many requests?

Does anyone know how many times one can request information
from a whois server and is it possible to have ones IP blocked?
I am using a script & cron to check every half an hour. I‘ve read
that the minimum time between requests should not be less than
15 minutes. What are the maximum number of requsts? Do you
have more information? Thanks.

I've done many queries to scan hundred of thousands domain names (.com and .net) continuously to whois.crsnic.net and they never block my IP :)

whois.crsnic.net whois.internic.net & whois.nsiregistry.net doesn't block IP

Doubt it, that's a pretty slow rate.

Did you regularly make queries with a script and from the same IP?
What were the intervals and how many domains did you check at a time?

I know that's very slow! But before I change it I wanted to make sure
how much I can increase it, without having any problems later.

yes, I scan list of domain names regularly, daily drop list (after 4 days - to see taster drops), The whole LLLL.net domain names once in a while(400k domain names),
LL-L.com, L-LL.com, etc...
As I said, crsnic.net will never block your IP on massive queries, and I don't even put delay between each queries

Is it possible to search a whois databases for domains with a certain status, for example
“Delete Pending”, or is this just wishful thinking? How can I find a drop list for a certain
whois database?

yes, it's possible for .com and .net..
but you need to have access to the zone file

http://www.verisign.com/information-services/naming-services/com-net-registry/page_001052.html

then use this kind of software to parse them
http://dnware.com/products/zone/index.php

or if you know how to code, you can write your own software to parse zone file.
