Do spam posts ever help your website?

I have a forum website. Since it takes too much effort to bring people to the
forum, I gave it up and let the website go wild. I consider this website a
mini-site since I don't want to spend more time on it. Without my involvement in
the forum management, a lot of spam posts appeared.

So my question is: should I remove the forum or is it better to just let the
spam posts grow. I am hoping the spam posts in the forum can help the page
rank. My goal is just adsense revenue.

AFAIK, linking to websites considered of a spammy nature by Google will negatively impact your PageRank. However, if it's earning more than it costs to run it, then there's no reason to take it down.

What forum software do you use? I recomend you start to use paid captcha. It will stop autoregistration on your forum.

First one I looked at - porn! (not that I'm complaining )

What exactly have you done so far to stop the spam? I noticed you have image verification on already - how long has that been on?

Next step - The Humanizer - should stop bots as it requires an extra field being used on registration, something bots won't do.

If that doesn't work. then you'll probably need to turn email verification on, if the spammers are able to get past the image verification, that is. Make them verify their email address, most of them won't bother.

Aye, I seem to delete them every day and they keep coming back. I have all of the verification that my version of PHPBB has, I shall look at the humanizer.

Thanks for the heads up :)

yup, i agree
image verification
extra compulsory field (if not, bot will ignore it)
email address verification

thanks for the replies.

I noticed that with the spam, the traffic increased, I am not sure the clicks increase though. Does this mean that the alexa rank is better?

I hope the page rank is up a little though I can not prove it, I really don't think
this spam hurts me since I have not lost any page ranks. Does anyone here have
real proof that the spam reduces the page rank?

I am hoping the spam in a forum is a easy or cheap way to build some "content", even though
the content is junk. How does google determine what is junk and what is not?

my statistics shows that the spammed forum brings in 30x more traffic to my sites.
However it does not contribute clicks. I am wondering if there are other advertisers
that just pay the views instead of clicks.

Do you have any regular staff/moderators on duty to help you?

It's amazing what a couple (real-live) people can do.
