Do hosting companies charge when you sell your domain?

Is there anyway I can do it for free? Like without having to register with some hosting company. I've just seen a lot of people selling domains for like 10-15 dollars why would they sell it for that if it's going to cost them about that much anyway. I'm confused.

It does not cost to sell it. It cost to transfer it. This is why you should always buy your domains from www.Godaddy.com because everyone has an account and it is 100% free to sell & transfer from godaddy account -->(to) godaddy account...


Now if we were talking about another hosting/domain company such as http://www.santrex.net it will cost you 7.45 for a domain (same as godaddy) but if you ever wanted to change or sell it to someone, It will cost you another $7-$12 to transfer it. This is why you should always buy from www.godaddy.com

The buyer usually pays any transfer costs to a new registrar. Transfers within the same registrar (called pushes) are usually free.
