Last year I grabbed around 100 .berlin domains for free during a promotional period. Today they expired and 101domain emailed me the renewal invoices. Now I know that, unlike most extensions, .de domains are not deleted when they expire, instead they are renewed and the registry will seek to collect the payment directly from the registrant just like a formal tax, unless you explicitly cancel the domains.

What about .berlin domains? Does their expiration procedure follow the .com's or .de's?

Thanks

Well they are new gTLDs so they may well follow the standard gTLD lifecycle.

Thanks @jmcc. Is there any way I can make sure .Berlin follows the standard lifecycle?

No, this is nonsense. Of course, no private organization (as the registry is) can collect payment like a formal tax. And the registry doesn't.

It's up to the registrar to delete .de domains, what it usually does when you don't pay the fee. Or the registrar can return the domain to the registry directly; in this case, the owner can choose to either keep the domain (probably with a different registrar), or delete it from the registry as well. Maybe you mixed this up.

And regarding your question: I'm pretty sure that .berlin domains will expire as well, but also here it depends on your current registrar.
