My response was exactly the same. It no surprise that ODP has such a bad rep. They keep out people that actually want to help and let the ones who do nothing to help stick around.

you have to remember they probably get hundreds of applications a day. Also just because you want to be a dmoz editor does not necessarily mean you will be good at it.

Direstories such as dmoz and zeal etc have very high standards on listings and who they choose to be editors.

I'm listed in their a few times but the category I wanted to be an editor in "had too many" or a sufficient number of editors.

Good Idea:) lol

Ive just submitted a couple of new sites. Guess its gona take a couple of months before they get accepted...

I just seriously dont see the point. They say that they have some of the best tools available for editing listing and approving them, yet they are rejecting more and more people. Whats the point in advertising that they are looking if they just reject every second tom dick and harry.

Anyway, guess its just tough luck for some on us.lol

better to be very selective than allow people top become editors who have no knowledge or understanding of how the system works or what sites are allowed etc.

Once you are an editor you can add any site you wish in the category you are editor of, what would stop someone just putting a load of rubbish sites in them etc.

The "niche" I was interested in hadn't been updated in 800 and some odd days! I would think they would be happy to have someone who is interested, willing to learn the ropes, and could help catch up on the rediculous backlog they have in most categories.

I must have been one of the unlucky ones to have not been born with this amazing, magical, mystical powerfull knowledge! :| I'm almost sure not one of the current editors had the knowledge you speak of before being trained and allowed to actually edit the categories.

And what experience have you personally had with dealing with the open directory? And do you think the people behind the open directory have time to sit and talk you through how it all works etc?

i dont know about dmoz but open directories such as zeal have a huge amount of text about the rules and regulations of how the directory works and what is allowed. Before you may become an editor you have to pass several tests, you gain points for submissions etc and you cant become an editor until all tests are passed, a certain amount of points have been acrued and the quality quotant of your submissions goes over a certain rating. Even after you have done this you are limited to which categories you can edit, the more points you get and the better the quality quotant the bigger the category (and more important categories) can then be edited.

take a look at http://www.zeal.com/guidelines/style/

I applied, but was told the category was too big for a starter. I just reapplied to a category with only a few links, but that I have interest in ( ... happens to be a breed of dog).

Went and applied for Zeal. I like the way they work. Did the test, well did it 3 times before I passed. But got through...lol

To be honest its the first time ive heard of Zeal. Am i missing something... I think that DMOZ should adapt a similar concept, then people like myself wouldnt start these topics

Good Luck to everyone who submitted their site to DMOZ, just hope mine gets accepted.

I haven't had much experience with dmoz other than submiting sites and the one time I applied to be an editor. I have had lots "experiences" at the resource zone with their "god complex" mods to the point of being banned for making a comment about the attitude of the same said mods (and suggesting the name be changed to the "Resourceless Zone") because of their silly, canned responces to webmasters inquiring about their sites. Dmoz is and will only ever be as good as the sites listed in the directory. However, they seem to choose to just not want to list sites! Seems kind of silly to me.

I haven't have much more experiences with other directories other than to submit sites to them. I have noticed a difference in the editors (the dir's I've found that do actually have human editors) attitudes towards the public in general.

do you not think things like that would put them off making you an editor?

I have the opinion that a fraction ( not all ) of the editors on DMOZ are self serving, if you look through some of the categorys there is some real CRAP in there.

dont know if said editors took a backhander or own these sites but some just take the P***!!!

Having said that, a guy who I used to work with has a niche site in a crammed global category ( mobiles ) accepted within days, so there are some decent editors on there I suppose.
