not at all.. Holo IS mixed reality, there's nothing wrong with mentioning it - it is what it is... and Holo is significantly a better term to market than mixed reality or MR.. not even close
i also don't think they are going to go ALL out on holo just yet because they know the price is too high

100% agree with your statement.

I think patience is the key with the term Holo.

Not going to lie I am invested into Holo & Mixed Reality so would love for both of them to do well.

But I have always loved the word "Holo" and have always maintained the fact that brandability wise it is a winner :)

I hope you are right and Microsoft does do the term the justice it deserves.

Future have a place for both.
Would be stupid to disregard any of them.

MR is the most disruptive tech we have ever encountered, more then tv and smartphones and many others
And holo is a super brandable term that will work well as well.

MR is the most disruptive tech we have ever encountered

sorry, but this is just not true on any level
.. while very COOL... NOT that disruptive... especially in comparison to 'true disruptive' technologies like autonomous vehicles, robotics AND 3d printing. VR/MR can't hold a candle to those industries.

Not talking about coolness. Its gonna make tons of stuff vanish in thin air.

Totally Disruptive in so many levels.

this is more the 'evolution' of certain industries as opposed to 'disruptive'

btw.. the "internet" by FAR is the most disruptive technology you have ever encountered haha
.. and this isn't anywhere in the realm of that either

.. but no sense in arguing about it :)

Microsoft... That is why they have changed their marketing approach to mixed reality.

not sure where you are seeing a change in marketing approach.
i see mixed reality being mentioned, as it should, but a change?

you could very well be right, i may not have seen what you have seen, which is why i am asking...
can you please point out some examples of Microsoft changing gears.

.. and not some blog or review site - but microsoft themselves.. is there any new product line that is named after mixed reality??.. have they changed the marketing approach multiple times?

multiple times?

First two links I have looked at on Microsofts website feature mixed reality as pretty much the tag line.

There is lots of their promotional material being changed to say mixed reality.

Yes they mention the word holographic as well which is good.

Even today Alex Kipman was talking about a mixed reality journey when talking about introducing the Hololens to Japan.

Like I said, not trying to stir anything. Just reporting the trend I am seeing.

I hope I am wrong ;)

Take the new Fragments Game for the Hololens for an example.

They mention "MR crime scene concept"

Developed for mixed reality.
Explore apps that showcase the possibilities of developing for mixed reality.

no, i agree.. not trying to stir anything up at all.. nothing wrong with healthy conversation.

but it is exactly what i thought and these examples you are giving are definitely not a change in approach in marketing at all - in any way... All they are doing is educating and explaining... you can't ask 'what's holoens' and say, 'well.. it's holo' (haha).. it's new to people so they are simply explaining what that is.

... take the marketing of 'cloud computing' for example... most people STILL don't what that is (seriously) but when explaining what it is, it will do so by mentioning other technologies and software..etc.. that make up cloud computing ... BUT... it's STILL 'cloud computing'. Just because they use other terminology to describe the tech - doesn't mean they are marketing that way

for an example of what i mean, check out - Sales Force
or IBM cloud services

i don't see any harm in what microsoft is doing by using the proper terms in explaining what they are trying to accomplish and i certainly do not see this is a new approach to market 'hololens'...
have you seen their twitter page?.. there's like five mentions of 'mixed reality' since June - maybe it was six

personally, i don't think a huge marketing opportunity exists in something like 'mixed reality' - the TERM itself, i mean (not the technology) ... it's clunky in marketing terms

that fragments game looks very cool.. no doubt... but you can pick any number of games for any console and say the same thing - but this doesn't mean a change in their marketing approach

.. by the way.. the page you sent me to was built on a "microsoft.com/HOLOLENS/...etc" page :xf.smile:

Just 5 hours ago lol... Both will work, and from a marketer perspective, MR is a genious marketing term for the masses but as always time will tell.
I do think a conversation like this should move to the other vr ar mr Holo thread lol

I agree with what you are saying :)

But my concern was not just with Microsoft.

Rony Abovitz talks passionately about Mixed Reality and says that is what Magic Leap is.

Robert Scoble who interviews many tech insiders is crazy about the keyword mixed reality.

Microsoft have distanced themselves from AR and have corrected interviewers who have referred to them as AR by saying we are MR.

CastAR who funnily enough have AR in their name have changed their approach to MR.

With all these companies potentially pushing the mixed reality keyword I just get slightly worried that Microsoft have jumped on the bandwagon as well not to be left out. People are going to be looking for content. If the public are being spoon fed that the content is called "Mixed Reality" then that could be what people start looking for.

My main concern is it is looking like potentially 5 big companies pushing mixed reality when Microsoft is the only company that has any affiliation to the "holo" keyword.

Anyway like I said I hope for all our sakes I am 100% wrong.

Obviously best case scenario for me would be to make money off of both Holo and Mixed Reality so fingers crossed for all of us ;)

Perception is the key lol.
Im just saying its wise not to close your eyes and disregard a massive term uprising.
We can try to 'defend' our favorite terms all day and thats fine by me but its not smart to look at the reality with only one set of colors.

The only reason I say change of marketing approach is because you know as well as I do before 2016 Microsoft never really mentioned the term mixed reality.

Everything was Holo/Hologram/Holographic.

Maybe I worded it wrong but what I meant was they have now started to describe their tech as mixed reality where there was no or at least very little mention of this keyword prior 2016 from microsoft.

I am not saying Holo won't be a term Microsoft will push hard.. I am just saying they are confusing their approach a little more than they probably needed to.

also of note is how the back end of holograms are being used as well with other words, like 'Word + Gram'
Check out Microsoft and their ActionGram application (believe it or not, i actually have Actiongrams(.)com)
I have also seen other uses of holograms being tied together with just the 'gram' ending.

I wouldn't go all out joining tons of keywords with the word gram (many are actually already gone tbh), BUT, there IS potential here and it only works SOMEtimes AND only in some instances.
I also very much think these are all a case-by-case

โ€ข Designergram(.)com
... in this instance MAYBE something like 'DesignAgram' may be better... not so sure i believe that (and believe it or not, it's already registered, although not holo related), so i went with the full, non-slang 'designer'.

โ€ข Shopogram(.)com
... i just don't like Shopgram - it sounds odd to me, so i went with the more catchy 'Shopogram', opting to leave the 'o' before the gram. I feel it flows very nicely, is extremely memorable and is right in line with other examples i have seen.

โ€ข Actiongrams(.)com

โ€ข Haptigrams(.)com
(Haptic Holograms)

โ€ข Pokergrams(.)com

โ€ข Casinograms(.)com

i love both of these last two (pokergrams and casinograms) but i do also believe that they would both be better positioned in the singular without the S... there is still a LOT of potential value here.

just thought i'd share that with you all

This post i quoted was from back in March...

This was story here was just a few days ago:

Instagram Opposes Microsoft Trademark, Claiming Rights in "Gram"
"... Instagram is essentially claiming rights in the โ€œgramโ€ suffix...."

Interesting. I did reg a couple of gram domains a couple of days ago in king: GramPor* and GramCasino (short version of HoloGramCasino etc). Already have MRGrams and some other ones. Just a small group of domains in case this Gram term will grow.
