Dear NPr's

I have been working from past month or so on upgrading dir.mobi so as to make it more useful. I have added the section called "dir2go" ( btw, I regged dir2go.com and dir2go.mobi as well) with tools which mobile user can use:

1. driving.dir.mobi--> dir can stand for directions as well, so added a form for getting driving directions on the go.

2. stocks.dir.mobi --> This is to get stock quotes as well as current index like dow, nasdaq and s&p which is updated every 20 min.

3. download.dir.mobi--> This sub-domain contains free ringtones, images and games. I have about 3000 ringtone, 500 images and about 40 java games listed so far. I will be adding more in couple of days and will also add sections for video clips, scripts etc later.

4. dotcom.dir.mobi --> This is to search for .com sites on the go. I have used dmoz.org open directory with millions of listings on my site.

I will be adding more tools in weeks to come and will use this same thread for any future updates on the site.

I would like to get your comments and feedback on the design, the tools and any suggestions for other useful tools that can be added.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, you are right, I wanted to use dotcoms.mobi for this purpose, and I waited till yesterday. Anyway, You have done a great job with that domain and I am going to put a link on dotcom.dir.mobi to your site as well, for those looking for whois info.

awesome job! especially driving directions!!

you don't know how frustrating it was trying to use mobile.mapquest at dotCom on my treo (it would not display the required fields correctly making the site useless).

now, i can use your site and the resulting table is formatted perfectly in my treo..... now if you want to throw in some small text links, we'd all be happy!

Thanks for testing this on treo. I have been testing the site on only the emulator so far. If someone can try the download section on the smartphone as well, I would really appreciate, it is still in beta.

I appreciate that. As suggested on another thread .mobi eco system (which talks about sites linking together) I will do the same, and have already added your site to it. Check it out, I added a link on the main page ".mobi sites" dotcoms.mobi

Thanks for adding dir.mobi to your site. eco system is a very good idea. To think of it, I am already doing that with dir.mobi, it is just that, links to other's sites. I have catagorized the links and have already linked to about 87 sites, and few have linked to me.

There is a link on bottom for registering. I just disabled the registration for now, you should be able to download now. Thank you very much for testing this for me.

New section added

I have added a new section to dir.mobi today:

time.dir.mobi:-> You will be able to find the current time in any part of the world on the go. The time is also color coded to easily figure out if it is day or night.

Please review and post your comments and suggestions.

Thanks,

Vcool

Thanks AndyR for the comment and recommending dir.mobi on your site, I have already included your listing in dir.mobi.

I will be adding more tools to the website in weeks to come and will work on making some of these tools available for others to use on their websites as well to help the eco-system.

Good work vcool. There's a lot of value in what you're doing. Dir.mobi is becoming a center of gravity for all the various mobi sites.

nice development - the world will use .mobi

vcool,

Very nice to see the ongoing development and enhancements to dir.mobi.

I live the US and last night I spoke to a buddy overseas who travels throughout Malaysia and India on business. I introduced him to .mobi by directing him to the mtld.mobi site and then used your - dir.mobi site - as an example of the potential of the extension. He was very surprised and excited that he could get more web access on his Blackberry. As far as surfing, he's been using it to get sports scores from espn, that's about it. He then asked/mentioned his recent visits to India and I remembered seeing a post about eindia.mobi so as I mentioned it to him as we were both scrolling down on one of your pages, there it was. He added both to his favorites list.

My friend tried to bring up several standard web sites on his blackberry as we chatted on and they did not resolve, just got error messages on the screen. That has been his mobile web experience over the last 9 months since he got the device. He gave an example of how not long ago an hour cab ride in traffic from an airport to his hotel used to be very frustrating. But now he just uses cab time to catch up on email (and scores of his favorite treams back in the US) and saves himself an hour's sleep instead.

We discussed my ideas for development of some .mobi names and he was very emphatic on how useful it would be to have more information available via PDA/Blackberry/Cell for business persons like himself. We agreed that airport waiting time is a natural end use for this technology. It was a welcome (but not unexpected) very positive response from a seasoned business traveller about the market and need for the mobile web. This has been my belief all along and I see .mobi as a way to get there. There is a lot of site development needed as well as marketing of the concept to businesses and consumers over the next year or two. My bet is that we will see plenty of both.

Long story short, very nice site, thanks for your efforts. Hope to have many sites to add there as they get developed over the next year.

Best Regards.

Thanks acc, for your comments and introducing .mobi to your friend, I think we all need to take your lead and do the same. The more awareness we spread about .mobi the better it is for all of us, the developers, as well as for end users. Next time I am talking to my friend or sending e-mail to my relatives, I am going to mention about .mobi, if possible.

I am very happy to see some people already using .mobi with their cell phones and it gives me a great satisfaction to see people using dir.mobi and eIndia.mobi ( which btw, is also my site).

I am also very glad that I found this forum of like-minded people who are always ready to help each other and share thoughts and ideas.

Looking forward to your sites as well, acc. We need to have a critical mass of developed sites for .mobi to be successful. There are about 3 million .com sites and we need to get to atleast 10 to 20% of .com, i.e. about 300k to 600k sites in next 3 years :imho: . More people develop their sites the better it is for all of us.

Vcool

PS: I just added another tool to dir.mobi :money.dir.mobi --> This has 2 tools, currency converter and mortgage calculator, both ,I believe, will be useful for people on the go.
