Diff Tld Valuation - Accounting View

DIFF TLD VALUATION
FIRST ATTEMPT

When you're looking at a ripped pair of underpants
with the brown stains - it's WORTHLESS. If you own
MyFavouriteGreekPizza.xxx in any tld it's not just
WORTLESS, it's got a NEGATIVE VALUE.
Let me explain. You reg it for $10 a year. You keep it
for 10 years. You charge it to your credit card at 18%
annual. Your estimated cost is $ 200, and PV is little
diff.
Say, you have a portfolio of 1,000 domains which you
intend to keep for 10 years. There are great names
like, say, FreeCreditCardIsHere.XXX in your portfolio.
Then the portfolio's NEGATIVE VALUE is around
$200,000.

This is just a basic accounting proceedure.
Now, we longer talk about WORTLESS names, but premium
and generic. One word. Huge traffic. The good stuff.
This is how the tlds look today - the pecking order:

.com
.de
.uk.co
.net
.org
.biz
.us
.cn
.info
.in
.jp
.eu
.asia
.mobi
.us.com
.kz
.cc
.TV

Remember, some tld's have astronomical reg & renewal
fees:
.mobi - from $15 to $75
.in - from $0.25 to $15
.cn - from $2 to $50
.cc - from $27 to $60
.jp - from $20 to $50
.us.com - from $25 to $50
.tv - from $30 to $5,000
.kz - the land of Borat
You need to factor it in.
Where does the mobi tld fit in?

This is work in progress.
Need your input. Let's understand where we stand. With
math and accounting.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
AfternicAfternic
Amongst other assumptions this scenario is assuming that everybody buys names on their credit card and then doesn't pay them off.

If I understand your question ... there are a LOT of good, well-intentioned folks losing a LOT of money in wasted "dot Mobey" registrations / renewals, and even "sales" made in the aftermarket ... due to irrational and misguided hype IMHO. :guilty:

There is a sales thread that just recently closed where the seller of an "dot Mobey" stated the domain would "easily be worth $XX,xxx in 5 years from now" (and it sold on Sedo for $65.00 (only 1 bidder)! :red:

There is another "dot Mobey" sales thread in which the Asking price is $XX,xxx ... and the person selling it acquired it for $8 less than three months prior, as well. These are just two examples of extremely wishful valuations ... versus cold reality, IMHO. :gl:

I guess the moral of the story then ... to save dollars and cents, don't register stuff based purely on hype and what others who stand to benefit the most say domains will be worth / values in the future, and don't keep renewing domains year after year that shouldn't have been registered in the first place (in "dot Mobey", or in any extension for that matter)!
Just my accounting and two sense, if this is purely an hypothetical / question for the "dot Mobey" ... perhaps it would be best to address it in the appropriate -- >> #1 Namepros .MOBI Forumโ„ข, as well! :imho:

Might've guessed that you'd be the only one to try and understand the OP.

I don't think that you should be offering any advice on regging names - skedaddle, quintet......what were you thinking...?

I didn't understand him fully, as I mentioned above ... "Skedaddle" (and "Honkers") both sold at profit, and previously offered $40 (again, at profit) for "Quintet" wasn't enough for me at the time and I wasn't able to subsequently get an higher offer in the current malaise, IMHO (but, most importantly, I never claimed it to be worth more than low - mid $1xx even when things were good)! :gl: :snaphappy:

Please PM for further details as your listing of my domains here ... seems to be seriously veering off topic! :imho:
Thank you.

Hmmm, seems your 'friends' 'mobite' and 'dandy2' are now banned Jeff.
Yep, they were the same person by the looks.

'They' were using same names no less on mobility, pulling same stunts before banned.

So no 'topic' to discuss.

Maybe you could all hook up on msn for sh*ts and giggles? :sold:

Whatever the case may have been, thanks to our crack Staffโ„ข for looking out for us and being proactive! :music: :imho:
Please close thread ... if you feel it's appropriate, as well.
Thanks again, kindly.

Discussion

Arnie,
it was Mobutu who thought it's better to kill the opponent than to debate him.

:)

I guess the topic is still alive for discussion ... but as I mentioned above, perhaps best to address it in the more appropriate -- >> #1 Namepros .MOBI Forumโ„ข, IMHO. :gl: :talk:

Have a great day!

Portfolio Valuation - Test Run On Actual Portfolios

PORTFOLIO VALUATION - TEST RUN ON ACTUAL PORTFOLIOS

We took a number of portfolios for a test ride. There is a good public source of portfolios held by different members at mobility & NP.

The test is purely mathematical and is NOT supposed to be the final word.
We'll try to estimate portfolios PV - present value. This is how accountants usually price real estate and porfolos with positive and negative cash flows.
Some elements of the Domain Names Portfolio Management Theory (DNPMT) can be found on wiki. The PV Tables are available on DNPMT.com

We assume that portfolios are held for 10 years, and the prevailing interest rates are 8%.

Andre PV= $115,153
keithmt PV= -$189,544 (That's negative $189,544)
Tim (Banned on NP) PV= -$177,436
Scandiman PV= -$ 52,522
newdomainer PV= -$232,634 - boy, this is REALLY big portfolio!

The calculation itself is somewhat precise. But if you have any technical questions about valuation or valuation proceedure please don't hesitate to ask.

Unfortunatly those numbers are meaningless. I have sold 60-70 mobis that pretty much paid for the portfolio you used for your evaluations. I will continue to sell what is not needed or wanted to pay for some of the renews.

Now take into account that mobi is only 1.5 years old and will continue to grow in value. Basically I have not lost any money yet and stand a good chance at gaining handsomly in the future :)

You're math does. Lets say I renewed every name I have
for the next 10 years and never sold one. That would be 400
names x $11.50 each per year ($4600). Now lets multiply that
by 10 years ($46,000) in total fees. So where does the
negative $180k come from? And remember, this is assuming
I never sold another name and renewed all of them. You realise
that is highly unlikely!

Ok forgot to tack on interest. This is assuming I used that money
for investment. I get you now...oh wait, mobi is an investment!
