Decentralised Internet .p2p & !com

In a month the decentralised Internet will be launching that has domains that cannot be seized, cannot be spied on and are sold via auction.

They want to sell the .p2p TLD which is fine. But it's possible to replace the 'dot' & start a whole new class of TLD's using either a +, !, or a _

Then you could buy like Apple! & Apple!com

My question for this forum is. Surely Apple! & Apple!com will be worth more than Apple.p2p right?

I would like to post a link to their cool youtube video and a link to how I would market it better but it won't let me :(

Ok I can't post a link, add an h to the link below at front to watch their youtube video

This below is a description of how I would improve it.

Youtube! & Youtube!com got to be worth more than youtube.p2p right?

TDI: The Decentralised Internet DAC

The Decentralised Internet, is an entirely new decentralised front end to the internet system that is based on a blockchain, much like Bitcoin.

Where the traditional centralised internet uses .TLD's such as .com & .org , The Decentralised Internet, uses !TLD's such as !com and !p2p and you could even have just a '!', as in apple! or hotels! as your web address.
Where the traditional centralised internet is accessed via programs like 'Google Chrome' and 'Internet Explorer', the decentralised internet is accessed via programs like 'BitFrog'. ('BitFrog' still gives you access to the centralised .TLD sites too, so the best of both worlds really.)

Why use The Decentralised Internet?

On the traditional centralised internet, because of the need to trust a central certificate authority, you can often be the victim of 'man in the middle' attacks and as whistleblowers like Edward Snowden have revealed, your internet actions are often spied on and recorded by 'Big Brother' and others against your will. However the decentralised internet is completely private and secure.

On the traditional centralised internet, sites can also be seized and blocked. However on the decentralised internet, sites can't be blocked or seized. The Turkish government for example, recently blocked, 'Twitter.com', but there would have been nothing they could have done about 'Twitter!com'.

How do I get a !com or a !org?

They are sold via *incentivised auctions, which are started whenever somebody offers the minimum opening bid. (which decreases every month.)

* The next bidder is required to bid at least 10% more than you, and if somebody does bid higher than you, you get half the difference between their bid and yours.

Can anyone bid on and end up buying something like Nike! or Apple!com?

Yes absolutely! And if you become the owner of apple!com, you can put whatever you like on the site & or sell it later. However only people who can also verify to the blockchain system that they are also the owner of the .com on the centralised internet by the same name will get a green tick next to their site. (To avoid copycatting)

Could these be worth a lot more in the future?

That's for you to decide, but quite frankly we believe the traditional centralised internet is obsolete. What kind of a company wants a site and an online brand that could be blocked or seized at any moment? Who wants their information spied on all the time? In fact a recent poll showed that over 70% of citizens in many countries felt the current level of spying was 'unacceptable'.

Besides spying, there's also been significant increases in moves towards internet censorship in many countries all over the world. So it's quite possible that in the near future many people will have switched to using the decentralised internet and many famous businesses may wish to put their brands on it too. Youtube.com obviously wouldn't want to have to call themselves Youtub!com on the internet system of the future would they? So who knows how much a site like Youtube! or Youtube!com could be worth in a year or two...

Which TLD out of these two is more marketable?

1. .p2p

2. ! & !com

The first would allow you to buy a web address like Apple.p2p the second would allow an address like Apple! & Apple!com

Seems the last time threads were created for this crap, they either got deleted or gone away.
And here you come back with the same stuff.

The auction factor would make it prohibitively expensive for many organizations.

If I were to create a replacement for DNS, I'd reverse the order, so that the TLD comes before the SLD. Example: com.namepros.www. Periods make for pretty good separators because they're easy to type; an exclamation mark would be more difficult. Colons might be a good choice, though they do require use of the shift key on a QWERTY layout. Semicolons would conflict too much with other domain-related identifiers. To specify a port, enclose the domain in square brackets, then add a colon; that's how ports are specified with IPv6 addresses, which also use colons as separators. To avoid conflicting with IPv6, domains names would need to be fully qualified: that is, they'd need to always be prefixed with a single colon. There are several security and usability advantages to forcing fully qualified domain names anyway. (An IPv6 address can begin with two colons, but not one.)

The point of having functional separators in domain names is to allow for delegation. In a decentralized DNS system, this probably wouldn't be technically necessary. We could eliminate real separators altogether and just leave semantic separators that serve no real functional purpose. For example: google, google-mail, google-maps. In this case, we may want to reserve ABC-* for the owner of ABC, but that wouldn't be a technical necessity, and wouldn't change how queries are routed.

In a properly decentralized DNS system, TLDs serve no functional purpose and should probably be eliminated altogether.

He's just a tad enthusiastic. ;)

@Joseph Green, Thanks for the feedback. The actual developer is keen to stick with .p2p vs. changing the dot too. Personally I think 'Something'!com & Something! works quite well myself. Intellectual property is not such a big problem on a decentralised system too.

Hi Paul, thanks for the detailed feedback! Yes people have been saying the exclamation is harder to type and also doesn't work so well when you say it because 'exclamation mark' is so long vs. 'dot'

I haven't thought about putting the com first.

As for the other technical stuff I'm not so hot on that myself, the developers are of the opinion that only something like an underscore may be backwards compatible with the existing internet infrastructure as in Brand_ or Brand_com.

@iowadawg apologies. These may not be that interesting to you. The first people to try this were 'Namecoin' & they only got to $50 million market CAP at their peak ($10 million now) and didn't really have an impact on creating a decentralised NameSpace so it may be these guys have little impact too. I really like the bigger umbrella company that is involved here 'BitShares' which is why I'm going out of my way to look into the domain name project.

@gilescoley A lot of things are moving towards decentralisation now. You might have heard of Bitcoin which is a decentralised currency but the technology allows for so much more.

One of the things in this case is a decentralised namespace. Adoption of something like this is unlikely, except for the fact that I think a lot of people are getting annoyed that their online habits are being spied on all the time and I guess a lot of companies would also want web addresses that can't be seized like what happened to Twitter or Pokerstars a few years back.

@Paul I think once you own the domain name you can sell it without going through the auction process, so the auction process is just supposed to get domain names a fair initial price rather than a flat fee from a domain name squatter.

I probably won't be bidding on any .p2p domains myself, I prefer a domain where either the brand is more by itself or replicates a .com as a +com or _com or something. I also think the developer while super talented really needs a business partner from this field to really have an impact.

Yeah I know about bitcoin but that's an online currency, I personally cant see this working, not anytime soon anyway...just my opinion though

Yeah they'd really have to come up with a mainstream angle, otherwise it's just going to be niche.

I thought the coms and orgs with a +/!/_ twist and marketing the program you use to access in a user friendly manner was a step towards that, so I was trying to influence them in that direction. But I'm skeptical too.

None of them are actually domain name/web address buyers and sellers (Neither am I obviously) but I think it's hard to start a business in a field when no-one on the team understands the business/field. (They are technical geniuses though, Carnegie Mellon top graduates etc.)

That's actually NOT in the cards for BitsharesDNS launch coming soon. Apple.p2p is, Apple! is not. The latter would require changing the Internet infrastructure in a way that cannot happen quickly.

Decentralized domain names of course DO currently exist, like .bit from Namecoin. Soon BitsharesDNS will join the party, and hopefully we'll see something out of Ethereum this fall as well. Everything else I agree with, this is absolutely the future, it has so many serious advantages over the current system.

BTW, I write about this topic often. I've written some articles over at LetsTalkBitcoin.com recently about the politics and security issues around these decentralized domain name systems versus the status quo. Click those links to read more and feel free to comment.

Hi bocanames, great articles and video links in them! Wish I'd come across them a few weeks ago actually when I was trying to get my head around this stuff.

Yes and just to be clear BitShares DNS is launching soon with .p2p domains.(The other ! domain Stuff was just my personal idea.)

As far as buying them, I'm not sure. It could be quite niche but when you think of people who made money from Internet domains, it's mainly those who bought when it was niche but could see the potential and as bocanames and other bright guys have told me 'this absolutely is the future'

So while I won't be buying many .p2p's as it's not my field. I suggest you guys who know about domain value, look into BitShares DNS a bit more if you are interested. Best of luck guys thanks for the feedback!
