Open Question:

Since a wireless device is being used to receive freely broadcast content on a FCC licensed RF spectrum, is there the remote possibility of broadcasting decency laws putting the skid on internet porn via a wireless device?

I highly doubt they'd put laws on viewing porn on a mobile device. It's also not exactly "freely broadcast content" because you are accessing it through mobile device and through a carrier. So I don't think this will be an issue. Except for parents that don't want their kids accessing porn. They'll have to put safeguards on their children's mobile devices.

Excellent topic scandiman! I don't know anything about RF spectrums but I do know the following regarding mobile porn:

1) Research shows that nearly 20% of Google mobile searches are adult specific

2) Analysts expect $14.5 billion to be generated by adult mobile content over the next 5 years

3) Hundreds of mobile porn sites have been coming out lately (xobile.com, ohmobile.com, playboymobile.com, and others that I choose not to list :))

There is a growing demand for adult content via mobile phones so this could be a potential problem in the future. Then again, the FCC has thrown so many curveballs at the adult industry in the past but haven't had much of an impact.. the industry is hotter than ever :$:

I also wonder about the free hotspot networks that some cities are setting up. To think my tax dollars are paying for some dude to get his jollies...this could get messy (pun intended :))

I have info on this topic saved somewhere. I recall the FCC getting involved by making suggestions to leading telcom service providers to come up with some ideas on how to keep kids from accessing porn. Also, I recall that some countRies were taking steps to ban porn on cell phones all together. I believe Saudi Arabia was one.

Both of you are right, and the mobile porn industry is going to explode! I asked one of my friends a few weeks ago if he has ever used the net on his cell phone. He said this: "I tried it once, I tried looking for Porn but it took too long to load and the pages looked funny." Looks like if Mobi was implemented we wouldn't hear about improperly loading pages.

I know a decent amount about the RF field, and I can say that your tax dollars are well spent for some of those hotspots. Despite some people getting their "jollies".

We are all going to be connected through a giant wireless network soon enough, and there will be hotspots everywhere. New Wimax Technologies will greatly extend the range of a wireless access point to up to a 70 mile diamater with one broadcast system. Spread those broadcast systems out and you can blanket hundreds of miles with high speed access.

That will greatly reduce the cost of mobile net access if carriers decide to take that route and connect the net into one giant WAN.

Carriers can block certain sites, but if they are biased towards certain sites then it ruins the point of the internet, which is to freely access whatever type of content we want, despite it being adult content.

Interesting posts. If anyone's looking for an available adult .mobi,
balling.mobi looks like a winner...

I agree the mobile porn industry will explode. But won't it get spanked by the FCC at some point? (I know, the puns are getting baaddd!)

The FCC will come after the mobile porn industry (it's their job) BUT they'll never shut it down.. the demand is too high and people will continue to find loopholes around existing/future laws

I agree that this an interesting subject. IMHO, a solution has to be found. Some kids of less than 10 years old have now a cell phone. I have some adult names but I seriously don't think that I will not develop them before they can somehow be blocked.

Maybe this is something where .mobi could stand out. They work with the manufacturers and mobile providers to provide a standard. Thus, I would love if they could come up with something. You should at least be able to block or unblock the sites where the owner reports that it contains adult content. However, there is not any feature actually with my phone regarding adult content.
