LONDON (AP) - David Beckham, the former England soccer captain known as much for his style as his play, has agreed to leave Real Madrid and join the Los Angeles Galaxy in a deal Major League Soccer hopes will boost the sport in North America in a manner similar to Pele's arrival with the Cosmos in 1975.

Wow... over 5 years thats $25 million a year. Maybe it will help boost the soccer scene in the US - at least I assume that's what they're banking on.

I saw this earlier. That's an amazing amount of dough. I'm not a big soccer fan, but I read that he's not the world's best player. It's an interesting gamble for US Soccer.

Beckhams career was over as soon as he was booted out of the England starters, i thought it at the time and unfortunately it's come true. He is a decent player, and a good bloke from what i hear/see but i think he should have ended his career at Real instead of going to America.

I can tell you that the real reason he moved to LA was that he wanted to be closer to Tom Cruise. FACT! :hehe:

No, i know english football virtually inside out. He has gone to boost his profile in USA therefore earn more $$ and to be nearer his soccer scholl which he ironically launched at LA Galaxy's Ground :p

He's not the best but he's versatile and he is very good at bringing in sponsorship money. He hasa hue fan base, in actual fact he made Real Madrid more then they paid for him in the first year he was there - he doubled thier income.

Real offered him a 2 year deal. Plus he is on more money and he iwll get first team football unlike at real madrid as their new manager doesnt really like him.

Reminds me of when Wayne Gretzky left the Edmonton Oilers in Canada for the Los Angeles Kings.

He'll have to learn to call it soccer. There are many types of football, only one type of soccer.

At least there's no LA NFL team to confuse it with ;)

When I was a kid (mid 70's) I had an LA Rams T-Shirt. What happened to them?

Moved to St. Louis. Currently L.A. is the biggest TV market without an NFL franchise.

I agree, he's not the finest player there is, but his popularity is extensive. I wouldn't be surprised if he would be a film star later on.

didnt read the article, but your thread says $250m deal, then your post says 5 years ..... 25m/year....

dont know if you have facts right or math wrong.......but $250m/5 years = 50m :p

[just irked me for some odd reason]

although hes not the 'best' player, hes a really famous (if not the most famous) - i mean cmon, bend it like beckham?

That contract is worth $250Million, including possible endorsement deals, they Gallaxy themselves will not be paying him the full 250..

and the only thing I have to say on the "news" is BEND IT!

His not even decent, I never rated him that much and he ever done much for England either. His only good at taking corners and crossing the ball, and if he would of stayed at Man U he would never of gotten game with Ronaldo there. I think it's his missus' fault, she just wants all the fame and fortune and Becks has also gone that way because of her.

No he isn't, his football soccer school was launched in america. They were already looknig at a house in LA last year.

And he is also doing it to make football popular in the usa.

BTW - i don't think is a terrible thing for getting paid to do very little. As 1 he has a natural talent so why not take advantage of it. 2. He is only getting what people are prepared to pay for him. 3. Football is like any other sport it take intensive training on a daily basis to stay at a top level and involves a strict diet
