Hi NamePros,

We’re announcing the launch of the .crypto domain extension on 12/11. 50,000 domains have already been registered. Go to https://unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=namepros to find available domains.

You’ve probably all heard about cryptocurrency, but may not be aware that new domain extensions are being launched on blockchains. These domains are not part of the ICANN system. They are stored by the owner, with their private key, not by a registrar like Godaddy. No one can transfer a domain or update it other than the owner. If you store website content on decentralized storage instead of Amazon Web Services, then no one can take down your website other than you.

A blockchain domain + Decentralized storage = An uncensorable website

This is the beginning of an entirely new internet built to protect free speech around the world.

Blockchain domain features
  • No Renewals - Pay once and it’s yours ... forever

  • No Custodian - Domains are stored by the owner. No third party can move or update them

  • Payments - The domain can be used as a payment address for cryptocurrencies. Send Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or any other currency all to the same domain

  • Uncensorable Websites - Attach domains to content on decentralized storage and create an uncensorable website

  • Transfers - Escrow agents aren’t needed. Transfer to anyone in the world in under 1 minute with no risk of being defrauded

We’ll be moderating this thread and we’d love to hear your thoughts!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
so what exactly are all the blockchain extensions now and where to reg them?
.eth
.crypto
.zilch

what else?

seems when I type anything decent to reg at unstoppable domains...only crap is available...the rest is prem..

Can this be really called a domain? It is somewhat like a blockchain contract address.
What happens tomorrow if someone applies, pay the fees and ICANN puts a go-ahead with .zil and .crypto domains?

The way this blockchain address is framed, I am sensing whitewashing of the dark Web. Fake news, pedi porn, alt right, and money laundry, all in one place.

The biggest issue I have with these domains, is that it gives the possibility to child abusers to post things for which they should be hanged on the trees for, and you won't be able to anything about it! or am I wrong ? If you can't, then I would suggest you to think on the protocol rules, to create penalties to this kind of cases. I don't have issues, with drugs or weapons, just with the one mentioned previously.

BTW, I was thinking for an ICANN gtld application for .crypto, when the boom started back in 2013 :)
Hey DNMRTL.COM - Agree that this is some of the worst stuff that could happen. Even the current centralized internet can't stop this sort of thing completely. Besides apps filtering it out on the second layer, which 99.99% will do, there's no silver bullet.

For .crypto, we took a list of 400K terms known to be associated with child exploitation on the internet and burned them so they can't be registered. The list was created by Thorn, a non profit dedicated to this problem. We will also continue to roll out tools to help on the content side.

While all of this is imperfect, at least blockchain tools make it easy to create open access to lists of sites associated with certain behaviors. Right now, platforms like Youtube and Facebook have no easy way to cooperate.

Would appreciate input on the above and other ideas as well.

Super interesting that you thought about a .crypto back in 2013! That's really early on.

You are welcome and thank you for your answer!

Regarding .crypto ICANN new gTLD, I would tend to agree with some other members here that there might a certain likehood that it might be granted to another company in future new gTLD rounds.

So imagine I buy your blockchain domain name, let's say lolwarrior.crypto, and I will spend time and effort to build a nice website on it. What is your guarantee that scenario with .crypto ICANN tld will not happen?

Because if that happens, then logically there would need to be a decision whether either blockchain .crypto domains or standard ICANN .crypto domains are resolved in browsers of typical internet users...and if that would be in standard ICANN .crypto favour, my blockchain .crypto domain name could still be used for another functions, like crypto payments, but it will loose it's ability to serve me as an domain name because the content will simply not be resolved in browsers of typical internet users.. is this correct understanding?
We can make no guarantee around what ICANN will do. However, I don't see how an ICANN .crypto would have credibility since it can't be used for crypto payments and is not a self custodied asset (like all blockchain assets). This would be false advertising on the part of an ICANN based promoter.

Moreover, the companies that are resolving it over the next few years will be against a colliding ICANN system and will contest such a move. Lastly, we have applied for the TM and will contest such an alternate launch. If previous cases like this are precedent, then it's likely such an issue won't be resolved until several years beyond 2022. This means that .crypto has plenty of time to grow into a standard across browsers, wallets, and other apps.

I think it's illogical for the ICANN system to invite such chaos if a domain extension is already in use across the world. And if they do, apps can still ignore them. And cryptocurrency wallets are starting to add browser functionality to their apps as well. it's dangerous to have two systems at once, ours will have already wide use, and ours will be an actual blockchain system, unlike an ICANN .crypto.

There is always a need for alternatives to (the main) options, look at what youtube can do at will.
New ideas create new markets and drive innovation.
Look forward to watching and seeing how this progresses - & need to better understand before "investing".

But one thing that always has to be kept in mind, there really isn't any "censorship protected" anything, anywhere, anytime. Sometimes overthink the reality - if you have a protected site that a Gov doesnt want you to see - they will shut down the internet - oh mobile - they will shut off the power. So, although we fell there are "gov safe zones" and untouchable zones... Are there really?

With that said - innovative alternative (primary and/or backup) services are vital (IMO) to keep the internet a bit more free. Thanks for the work you guys are sharing with us here and being responsive to the questions.

Curious if there is any precedent of a governmental or corporate organization attempting to take down a blockchain website - their tactics and what the resolution was.
I haven't seen any particular discussions around a specific website before, but I don'
Thx CJ6, I get it. There's tons of references to using Telegram, but my point was that none of this is relayed at the point of purchase on the end user regarding usage after purchase. Plus it's all done through the Unstoppable site, and I'm playing the Regular Joe here, seeing as Unstoppable has opened this up to the point of even creating ads here on NP and dedicating a thread to the .crypto launch.

By no means am I incapable of delving into exterior sites and research outside of Unstoppable, but my point was that this should be made CLEAR AS DIRT before the fact.

All good, I have patience, but its the principle of the thing. Its become too common practice among startup and new offerings even among established business to work out the bugs and proper tech implentation after the fact. Bad practice, and starting off on the wrong footing.

If you don't know what you're doing, just say it!. Simple as, "We're offering registrations as of xx date, however, we can't guarantee immediate usage due to ongoing efforts to perfect the platform." or whatever.

Thx again CJ, read earlier it was successful for you, (I'm sure you went deeper into it however for it to happen, ie followed on Telegram) so I know it will work eventually. Exciting stuff indeed. But @Unstoppable Domains and any other new startup, just say it from the get-go that there is a staggered or testing phase.
Hey Hotkey,

I appreciate your comments and think there's definitely more we could have done to be more clear on the fact that claiming isn't possible for everyone yet. We'll definitely implement that feedback. What we initially did was tell everyone that it would be live on a specific date. We are now live and opening up claims slowly so we can keep testing. We're sharing our progress in Telegram, but not sending emails because updates need to be made on a daily basis right now. Once anyone can claim, we will send out an email letting them know.

I know that a launch like this sounds a bit sloppy. I don't disagree. But blockchain tech is somewhat different than other software in that once you go on chain, if there's any sort of bug at all, transactions are irreversible and domains could go to the wrong person. It's like a space shuttle launch. We need to solve almost every bug before releasing. Amazon has critical bugs that persist for years. We couldn't release under those circumstances.

All of this is new so we expect launches to continue to be buggy. I think we do know what we're doing though. It's just that there's no room for error so we sometimes delay at the last minute out of an abundance of caution.

A trademarked brand or one that is in common use by a brand. And yes, the list is currently overly inclusive of some generic terms. They will be removed the list and made available, not just given to the brands that have the .com.
So tell me how “store” is protected? That’s about as generic as it gets.

I have successfully transferred a .crypto from one wallet to another. The transfer took seconds. No code needed, no lock, no registrar approval, etc.....Literally a few clicks and done!

Full custodianship is really something I can get used to.

In addition, I listed it for sale on the market with only a few clicks.

Note that Coinbase announced a patent to be able to send BTC to an email address connected to BTC wallet.

I had been under the impression that being based in the US would eliminate the need for a censorship -resistant website - meaning that primary purpose for me of having a blockchain domain would be as a wallet shortener. While I do not load many videos to YouTube I do recall trying to upload some videos of beautiful Playa Cabo San Juan in Tayrona Park near Santa Marta, Colombia to a Facebook account and I guess that Facebook due to memory limits did not allow it.

Well, some respected crypto Youtubers are now observing that recently YouTube is removing large numbers of crypto-related videos from their channels for bogus reasons. Perhaps even in the US another social media platform is needed which is not controlled by Google and Facebook.

I wouldn’t consider my name a category killer yet it’s not available. Then you start diving in and anything worthwhile is not available.

If they have no confidence in the rollout of the product, why would potential customers have confidence in them?!

Premium domain releases have nothing to do with our confidence in our product. Premium domains are for speculators. We want 1 billion people to have a domain. We could do that without releasing a single premium domain.

Blockchain domains don't have to follow the same rules as DNS - and we don't intend to. Adoption of users and of applications is the only thing we're thinking about. Insofar as premium domain releases facilitate those goals, then we'll pursue them.

The reason to pay attention to this tech is if you're looking for something new and different from traditional DNS. If you want the old way of doing things, I'd focus on ICANN domain extensions.

I'll post this, but mods, feel free to remove it if its not allowed.

Looks like UnstoppableDomains is holding another AMA tomorrow and giving away a .crypto domain to all attendees. Just FYI. The last one that they had was a a specific domain, such as 2 words at random (description & animal), but you got to go through the random domain generator until you found one you like. I suspect it'll be the same here. During this event (well, anytime), you can ask them any question you have regarding domains & blockchain.

Hi Jimmysun,

There will only be a hash if you have created a dweb site either with our templates or other templates you might have access to. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with, thanks.

$50,000+ and doesn't even work on standard browser?
Yeh it does seem silly at first glance, but it doesn't take much to do a DNS change or a plugin to access these, if you cared to explore. If you don't care, well that's your prerogative but surely you can appreciate the risks involved in DN investing on new innovations that may very well be the groundwork of future standards.

Dot-crypto is pretty cool with their vision dual usage domains: direct crypto payments using the DN rather than a super-long BTC address, and you can develop it to be used just as any other domain.

Dot-crypto is NOT pretty cool in that I had believed they used user-input searches to "premiumnize" their names.. I saw it happen first-hand, eg. queried a name.. avail for a couple days to reg, and by end of week reserved.

I asked them about this, response was:
Searches are not being used. There were some domains that were not properly categorized. We just updated. What this means is that many domains were available for cheaper than they were supposed to be. If you think any were updated by mistake, please let us know.
but even afterwards, it was happening. Sure it is possible with so many millions of wordings avail, it just took a LONG time for this "categorization" to propagate within the system.

So, just like we scratch our heads sometimes on some traditional domain extension sales.. like "what was the buyer thinking" this isn't too far off of the same, not everyone wears the same lens.

Hello, Brad. I was just interacting with you on your Telegram a couple hours ago.
I'm looking forward to the release!
More than anything, I will be learning how to publish a site in the decentralized storage. I've got your videos ready. 👍

We plan to release premium domains soon. I'd recommend watchlisting the ones you're interested in to get notifications. Best to check in Telegram to hear the latest on that. Thanks for the kind words!

I agree that it sounds like a completely separate forum from the existing ones. We'll suggest this too.

The thread is awesome! Glad to see so many folks posting about blockchain domains.

I was disappointed because I missed the deals. 😩 i ordered my first domain about 2 weeks ago.
Are you ever having any deals at another time?

Hi Brad,

thanks for posting this information, and welcome to Namepros!

2 questions which immediatelly comes to mind:

1) How will you handle the situation when another company applies for .CRYPTO extension in standard ICANN process, and will get rights to operate the extension?

In another words, if person A now purchase your blockchain domain name, let's say example.crypto, and person B will purchase a standard ICANN domain name example.crypto (in case .CRYPTO is granted in standard ICANN process to some domain registry in future), which website will be resolved in standard brownser ? This is hypothetical situation, but given the popularity of keyword "crypto", there are chances someone might apply for .crypto.

2) How will you handle the situation when illegal content will be stored at webpages on blokchain .crypto domain name, and valid court order from major jurisdiction (USA, EU) will be issued to remove the content/website?

Many thanks for clarification :)
