Hi NamePros,

We’re announcing the launch of the .crypto domain extension on 12/11. 50,000 domains have already been registered. Go to https://unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=namepros to find available domains.

You’ve probably all heard about cryptocurrency, but may not be aware that new domain extensions are being launched on blockchains. These domains are not part of the ICANN system. They are stored by the owner, with their private key, not by a registrar like Godaddy. No one can transfer a domain or update it other than the owner. If you store website content on decentralized storage instead of Amazon Web Services, then no one can take down your website other than you.

A blockchain domain + Decentralized storage = An uncensorable website

This is the beginning of an entirely new internet built to protect free speech around the world.

Blockchain domain features
  • No Renewals - Pay once and it’s yours ... forever

  • No Custodian - Domains are stored by the owner. No third party can move or update them

  • Payments - The domain can be used as a payment address for cryptocurrencies. Send Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or any other currency all to the same domain

  • Uncensorable Websites - Attach domains to content on decentralized storage and create an uncensorable website

  • Transfers - Escrow agents aren’t needed. Transfer to anyone in the world in under 1 minute with no risk of being defrauded

We’ll be moderating this thread and we’d love to hear your thoughts!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I do wish Unstoppable Domains offered 2FA for account protection. Note I have read that text-based 2FA is hackable whereas an authenticator app is considered safer.
Make the recommendation to them.

If I remember correctly, before you can make any changes to your domains, you have to sign the wallets (or keys or whatever they are). So, I don't think a simple password to a website would matter. You need to have access to the blockchain, as well.

Awesome! Well done!

Did you enter the entire link in the IPFS hash field?

What did you do with the IPFS redirect field?

How long did it take to upload?

  • From pinata.cloud, upload the contents of the website folder (choose the main folder), upload took less than a minute for this simple site
  • then go to the Pin Explorer, copy the IPFS Hash for that site (in case you have uploaded multiple sites)
  • paste that long alpha-numeric code into the box on Unstoppable's website.
  • Save and wait for the updates to be made.

There are no .crypto sites in Viewblock yet
Learning learning..

ViewBlock is a Zilliqa explorer, thus only displays .zil sites.

.Crypto would need an Ethereum-integrated explorer.

**

As per support, there is nothing yet that displays a list of IPFS .crypto sites.

Looking forward to a browser that will use the ipfs:// protocol, and eventually resolving our .crypto domains to their domain name, rather than the hash.

All of these transactions cost gas, so moving forward how viable will it be for a simple site update then, as each change produces a different hash, which then has to be saved via UD. Especially as the network gets more and more congested with users looking to build sites.

**

Exciting stuff, regardless. Even if it only takes 15+ hours to upload a hash for a 30 kilobyte size site. It's like the good old dial-up modem days.

Yes. Being the top dog on the Ethereum blockchain is not easy to hold. What this development does reinforce is that the core of crypto users are players with .crypto domain extension. It's been accepted by the core base.
The interesting thing here is that people are praising security, but there is none. Similar to crypto currency, if your payment address gets stolen you have no recourse.

And let’s be honest, it’s nothing more than a payment address. This is not a domain name in the traditional sense so don’t expect websites to be built on .crypto.

I see your hung on the security issue. I would recommend you install a crypto wallet and play around with a little crypto. You might be pleasantly surprised at the amount of security available.

Sure theres been cases of crypto stolen, but for the most part it is safer, much safer, than any domain you hold in a registrar's account.

Websites will be built on it. The decentralized web is coming, some would argue its already here. Watch this space, don't blink, because things are moving very quickly.

After a couple days of building lists and making comparisons, decided on the right .crypto to use with my dn portfolio site. And btw there are a ton of awesome names avail regardless of so many being held back by UD for later release or brand claims. Went with

Instantly • Crypto

so will offer as an option to a buyer if they want to pay with crypto rather than fiat. I think it displays nicely on the bottom of my site too, and installed a special Bitcoin symbol font beside it to mark it (even though .crypto is Ethereum based, it can be used to pay to any crypto addresses that are assigned to it).

Chose a name that is more generic and interchangeable to use on more than one site if I choose, instead of being specifically branded to my current portfolio.

Really like the ability to give a permanent memorable address, rather than a long alphanumerical. The fact that you can reassign addresses and eventually the .crypto will have dual function of serving up a decentralized website as well is ingenious.

Now #33 in 24 hour transactions (300) and #23 in 24 hour users (193).

Brad
I show a little better numbers than that at dapp.com. I have it at #17. Although, that number compares all ethereum dapps in all categories.

A more interesting number is the total transactions.

Consider that not everyone has claimed (put on chain) the domains they have reserved and that 7 or less letters are still held back. Already, to compare, .crypto would be in the top 30 list of NewGtld's.

The Metamask app has been removed from the Google Play store.

Yep 2020 should bring some interesting developments, will it be an all-out war between crypto-based applications and the Googles, or will they find a truce? Something tells me that with Google jumping on the registry/registrar ICANN-regulated domain bandwagon, we may see the spawning of a new internet search/browser entity. Brave is well on it's way.

UD is going to implement 2FA, Garptrader.
Agreed. The motivations for decentralized applications are becoming more justified. Google is fueling the fire. ICANN is fueling the fire. The technology for a decentralized internet is here, it's just about connecting the dots. With one switch ICANN, Google and Amazon(AWS) can get hit hard. The decade of the 20's will be exciting times.

The centralized FAANG's (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google, etc.) are waging all out war with decentralized and crypto technology. Lots of discussion around these companies putting a choke on decentralization. From the Coinbase CEO on Reddit:

"Coinbase CEO here. This is really unfortunate to see. Apple seems to be eliminating usage of Dapps from the App Store.

If Apple customers want to be able to use Dapps, we may need to make this request know to Apple in some way. This is an important area of innovation in finance, and many developers and early adopters of this technology have millions of dollars worth of crypto tied up in these financial applications, which they will no longer be able to use on Apple mobile devices if this app store policy continues."

By using Etherscan.io one can obtain some limited info on the status of the .Crypto launch thus far. As of Jan 9th, 2020 AM there are 1445 different holders of .Crypto domains and nearly 42 thousand .Crypto domains have been claimed (I believe registration on the UD website does not interact with the ethereum blockchain - only the claim process). I suspect the top several holders are affiliated with Unstoppable Domains as I cannot see any logical reason why someone would register 500 or more .Crypto domains. I checked my account and found my owner address and was able to find it on the blockchain with the total number of .Crypto domains I hold. I did not see any info there regarding keywords registered.

For information purposes, the UD team is very active assisting with the roll out on Telegram. They are answering questions as fast as questions are asked. Their support is phenomenal considering the technology of the Decentralized Web is new to many. If you need assistance give Telegram a try.

I just followed an AMA with UD and crypto users are quickly jumping onboard the .crypto train. No question it has been recieved well. With an estimated 50m crypto users currently and an estimated 1bn over the next ten years the future looks bright.

Regarding wallet transfers - my wife and I visited Cartagena (briefly) and Santa Marta, Colombia in November. Because credit cards sometimes get frozen when charges appear from remote locations, I wanted to have multiple payment methods. We took enough cash for a couple days but I did not want to be carrying large amounts of US dollars either. We sent a modest Xoom transfer for my wife to pick up at Bancolombia in Santa Marta. The rates are favorable to money exchange businesses but involve lengthy waits. So I ordered a Bitpay card but there were some delays in receiving it. I then discovered some complaints about Bitpay fees for idle funds. Bitpay only works with Bitcoin and Ethereum. I found that Crypto.com also offered crypto cards and works with many different currencies. I was able to transfer funds from Coinbase to Bitpay and Crypto.com cards (using the UNstoppable Domains wallet shorteners) but ended up sending my Bitpay funds back to Coinbase. Note that in my limited experience Litecoin transfers are faster and less costly than Bitcoin transfers.
The Crypto.com card works anywhere Visa is accepted but many ATMs in Santa Marta were not part of the Visa network. I found an ATM at the marina near our hotel that worked which paid favorable rates and found another downtown not far from the Bancolombia. I also used the card at the Carrefour supermarket near the marina. Purchases result in small payouts of MCO currency which can be converted to cash. However, after our trip I still had funds in the card and in December Bitcoin went under $7000. I tried using the remaining card balance to buy BTC and was unable to so. I called customer service and they confirmed that the card cannot be used to buy crypto. Kind of odd but just an fyi.

Note IMO it is better to use the Crypto.com card for purchases than to pull funds from an ATM to make purchases. An ATM withdrawal will involve fees whereas a card purchase will actually generate a small rebate without fees (exception for foreign transactions but rates using the card are very favorable to exchange houses so worth it).

Another test of a Litecoin transfer using the wallet shortener of Unstoppable Domains (though perhaps I am still not using it as intended) - at 4:33 I sent a LTC transfer from Coinbase and at 4:34 Crypto.com notifies me of a pending transfer. I receive transfer confirmation from Crypto.com at 4:50. The fee was .0000042 LTC or a fraction of a penny. We still do not have instantaneous confirmations with crypto but try doing a bank to bank wire transfer and compare the fees and time delay.

I still confirmed the LTC address before sending but I notice Coinbase allows usage of an email address. Perhaps I could type the address domain.crypto but instead I click the banner to read the barcode and simultaneously using another device have the barcode open. Perhaps I need to set up the address in my contacts.

just go to unstoppabledomains.com and you can register one with either crypto or credit card
Every name I’ve searched is either protected or coming soon. It’s not a good roll out. Just release the inventory and move along imo.

There are great names still available.

true, but have you seen the user on opensea with 16,000 names - mostly ones like drivinginstructor-4hire.crypto or 556x45mm-ammo.crypto? i'm really not understanding what's going on there but they've spammed the place up

•••
If the names are protected it is done to protect established brands. So the domain goes to the brand owner.

insurance.crypto
This name will be available for sale at a later time.

carinsurance.crypto
This name will be available for sale at a later time.

lifeinsurance.crypto
This name will be available for sale at a later time.

homeownersinsurance.crypto
This name will be available for sale at a later time.

etc....

They are not just protecting brands. They have withheld almost any high quality generics.

I’ve seen several instances where @Unstoppable Domains has been questioned about protected domains that shouldn’t be protected. In my case they said it should be released but is still on hold. Also, many others are waiting release which is ridiculous. It shows a lack of faith in their product. If they were confident that names would get registered, they would roll out the entire lot at once.
Hey Keith,

Thanks for your response. I'm sure it's a bit frustrating to have to wait. We've decided to go slow with premium roll out because we're trying to get all of the lists down. As you mentioned, it's not perfect yet. And since domains are on the blockchain and irrevocable, there's a high cost to us being wrong. We don't want to accidentally sell a protected domain or mis-price a premium domain. We'll start releasing soon, but not all of them at once.

The goal is for many to go to an on chain public auction. However, premium domains are less critical right now to adoption than integrations with wallets/browsers and tools to build websites. Rather than build and run an auction, we want to onboard users. That's where our focus is for now.

Premium domains will be a focus though in the near future.

Some of the generic category killers are going to go to auction is my understanding. You can add it to your watch list, via their site, and they will notify you when it becomes available.
I wouldn’t consider my name a category killer yet it’s not available. Then you start diving in and anything worthwhile is not available.

If they have no confidence in the rollout of the product, why would potential customers have confidence in them?!

I would argue that because the decentralized web is new and that the tools to make it user friendly are currently being developed, the greater interest will come later.

Totally agree with this. It's more similar to a .com or another early extension launch in the 1990's. Those markets took years to develop. It's only after the DNS system matured that big releases starting happening.

Right now, the technology needs to focus on onboarding users and integrating with applications. That's a bit different than launching a new Gtld today.

Anyone get their free .crypto with last weeks AMA?

Landed MadRabbit, what the hey, hey? :) Succesfully imported an eth to MetaMask, and claimed.

Good stuff. Keep up the good work, UD.

Keep in mind, ye skeptics, .crypto may not reslove domains *yet, but .everything else can't send payments, now can they? If looking for comparisons, or tit-for-tat. All is positive with .crypto, it's in its infancy and keep an eye on the horizon.
