I usually visit a domains dropping tool in search of good names that have expired. Recently, I found a single-word .NET in Spanish. As soon as I saw the name, I did the following:

1-Went to the Google search bar and entered the word "cansado", which means tired in Spanish. I got 2,630,000 results.
2-Went to the Google Keyword Tool and got a global monthly search level of 165,000.
3-Then I went to the Registrar of my choice and found out that the other main extensions (.COM, .ORG, .INFO) were taken.

Conclusion: Given the above data, registering this domain was the best decision.

Whether the purchase was logically sound or not hinges on what your intent was for purchasing the name.

I don't elaborate the analysis processes I go through before deciding to buy a name, but I can say that it's a helluva lot more in-depth than that and once the quantitative side is resolved in terms of numbers and wavy lines, there are enormous qualitative considerations that usually make or break the deal.

(PS- I'm getting a gmsve of 18K for "cansado")

Thanks for the input. The 165,000 is the global monthly search level.

Its 18k for the exact phrase, but 165k for the broad phrase.

Just to clear it up for both of you :)

What end user would want to acquire Tired.net in English? Perhaps a company which sells recliners or a hotel chain which offers a relaxing night's stay? But trying to sell the domain to that company would not be an easy sell. Perhaps one could identify a list of potential buyers beforehand, take a calculated risk of ~$6 (plus one's time), reg the name for one year, market the name and if there are no takers (including in the forums), drop it.

Note that in the last few months I have sold a number of Spanish (& English) domains with perhaps unimpressive Google search volume for XXX prices. As Dong, mentions the qualititative aspect comes to play - branding (and of course someone who for whatever reason wants the name regardless of the stats).
