I recently purchased hostgator website hosting and I want to create a forum. Can I do that using Hostgator's sitebuilder, or do I need to sign up with a forum site, such as SMF or PhpBB, but one that will allow me to place ads?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

i think hostgator has the Fantastico.

login your cpanel and look at Fantastico De Luxe and go to Discussion Boards. You will find phpbb or smf. click and install it.

for first time use phpbb2. easy one. and now you can place your ads at anywhere on your forum :)

and you can convert it to vbulletin, ipb or else for a next time. :)

it's paid hosting so you can add your own ads on your site
you can install a forum software via fantastico
phpBB2 (2.0.22)
or
SMF (1.1.3)
based on:
hostgator.com/shared.shtml

I would focus on building your forum with content & frequent users before adding ads. Otherwise all you have is an empty forum with a page full of ads.
Best of luck

As my Fellow members said, you can do it from Fantastico, after that you'll just need some Theme Modifications to allow Integration of Ads. Note: Original Themes are built with MOD Supports, others may need some Editing. You can access the Theme Files via your File Manager. Please ensure that you follow the Instructions accurately. But my advise would be same as notlikeyou. Emphasise on users rather that ADs at first.

I would install SMF. I find the interface to be really easy to configure.

But as said above, without any content you just have a page of ads. Build content first.

l33thh4ck3r, I don't seem to get your issues but Experts say that Conversion from SMF to VBulletin is far more simpler than PHPbb. SMF is good as a Free Forum. Depends on your Knowledge and Liking, what you choose now.

SMF is really good. Try it and you'll know why it's a good software.
