Create your own tld?

Some of the nutjobs working for ICANN still seem to think selling domains for high prices is a crime... It certainly will do the Internet no good and more than anything else, will just further confuse customers who are already overwhelmed with a plethora of choices.

I think this would be good for a few domainers with money or exp with setting up a TLD.

.xxx, .sex, .por would be setup overnight.

.kids may go soon after that as well as .movies.

I personally do not like it but it is not all bad IMHO.

I really dont think you are right Rick.

My experience, outside the domainmarket, is that when there is a lot to choose from then people choose what they already know.

The only extensions that will have succes is in my opinion, as Diabro also mentioned:
.xxx , .sex , .porn (and to a whole other section) .kids , games , .car(s)

Extension for the adultmarket, entertainmentmarket and websafety/safe to surf for kids market will be succesfull. imo.

I really dont think McDonald's will buy their own extension, why should they? They have TM so they can get their Brand in every other extension they want.

So I am not that worried, it might even help .com because as I said, when there is much to choose you choose the one you know.

What I dont like is that it will be a lot easier for countries/companies/ISP's to restrict/censor internet users. I am sure Iran or similar countries (France, yes I said it ) will make use of it.

I guess you need to think what is a TLD. Its a top level domain. Then there is second level domains, etc. So instead of thinking in terms of extension, think no extension.
i.e. instead of namepros.com it would be http://namepros instead of google.com it would be google.

If managed correctly it could potentially be of benefit and work well, unfortunately we know it won't be and the corruption and incompetence that seems to rule will guarantee it will make the net even more of a mess. Before doing this, they should sort out the current issues.

Actually this is a brilliant plan B from the forces that want to take the prized

domains from domainers hands ... remember what Rick said ? Creating new

extensions will mainly benefit the dark side.

I do not think ICANN has ever cared for, nor liked, "the hole domain name thing". This would not be considered a loss by them.

But I feel that without domainers that most new, and a lot of existing, TLD's will fail.

This may also open up a situation where countries, such as China, buy TLD's and try to get more control over the Internet.

I have a feeling that all these addig of new tlds are not just for demand but for filling up the wallets of ICANN. Each new release Dot Biz, Dot Info etc gives them a huge amount of revenue especially for those chasing after the choice domain names. Each time a new tld comes up, it is guaranteed profits.

For me I am a bit tired of chasing after these, as in the end the real profits goes to ICANN.
