The ultimate rollover solution...

Does it exist?

Please correct me if I´m wrong, but all the rollover solutions I know have drawbacks:

- CSS works on most machines (at least the ones the people use I would like to have as a client ;) ) but doesn´t allow for fancy fonts.

- Javascript is blocked on a lot of machines. Especially cybercafe machines which my clients tend to use a lot.

- Proprietary code (from GoLive, Dreamweaver) is mostly Javascript, and not very cross-browser friendly.

- Flash is not readable by robots.

So does the ultimate rollover solution exist??? It should be:
- Accepted by "all" browsers, also with high-security settings on, readable by robots, and small in code.

Any help?

I use either css or the DW ones. I've never encountered an issue with any users, as far as I know.

BUT:

I believe the design should stand on it's own and the rollover not be important for the design. Meaning, rollovers are often used to help distinguish the button as being active from amongst the list of the other buttons, or to make it more noticeable in general. I've also seen people require rollovers so you know what the button is! Like, they would have an ambiguous graphic that will switch to the name of the link when you rollover. This is terrible.

Your links should work and be presentable without the rollovers, and they really have to be running a IE on caveman if basic DW or css rollovers don't work.

(don't use js from an external file - this might be why your js was being blocked!)

I do not think that the ultimate rollover solution does exist. You could make quite a killing if you figured it out.

Kinda strange, don´t you think? It´s a little like the embedded fonts that used to be big for a while...

Just use CSS.

It will work for 99% of people.

I have noticed web design is a hit or miss. Either the client can use it or they can't. Same with browser functionality. They should really make standards and make Bill Gates and all other browser manufacturers get together and agree on a set standard. I could see it happening in the next 10 years.
