Recently I've been using Dreamweaver at work... but I haven't been using any preset templates. I've just building websites from scratch... using CSS with div floats, relative positions, and etc to position everything. I'll use PS CS3 to get a rough idea of what something may look like before I do it... and then I'll try to reproduce that completely by hand. I'm now also trying to learn some Javascript for extra effects (I look at some of these JS codes and just ask why can't it be simple like PHP). Right I'm just literally copying and pasting JS code that I need.

I can't do very complicated things yet, but I feel at this point I can make some decent looking templates. Sometimes I'll get issues with divs not being where I want them. Sometimes I'll get the IE and FF look very slightly different. Sometimes I'll get random things I don't know how to fix... like one span being padded even though I set the universal padding to be 0. Little minor bugs here and there that I eventually work my way around. I used to have a huge problem with IE and FF showing different things, but this eventually went away.

But back to Dreamweaver. I like it because I can have multiple tabs open at once, and I just like the color coding. It's very easy to be structured. Recently I started playing around with some presets... and I've seen some nice websites built off Dreamweaver.

But overall, is Dreamweaver worth learning?

Also, is Dreamweaver completely valid? Sometimes I'll code, see what it looks like in Dreamweaver, and somethings may be off. For example I have a table floating outside of the wrapper in Dreamweaver, but it shows up perfectly fine in IE and FF. I haven't had a chance to validate my pages yet. I've tried uploading but get errors (assuming because the .php extensions which may not be allowed for upload).

Thanks in advance.

if you're using dreamweaver templates (or dreamweaver in general) and you haven't been fixing the code dreamweaver generates, then you will get tons of validation errors. try uploading your files to your web hosting and then validating.

dreamweaver is a tool. i suggest learning xhtml and css first and just using dreamweaver as a code library / text editor.

I liked Dreamweaver - for the syntax highlighting. I then moved to Notepad++, Gedit (linux only), and now finally Emacs (wonderful program). I would suggest you learn XHTML and CSS more or less fluently, you can then just type up all the code and see in your head how it should look. Then you can account for browser quirks after testing.

Dreamweaver is good but learning the XHTML and CSS will make everything flexible and more customizable for you and your website
