Once IPTV and High Definition IPTV start to take off, major companies will flock to IP broadcasting and the .TV extension as alternatives to conventional broadcasting.

Why? A.) It’s less expensive than conventional broadcasting, B.) The Internet uses domain names not channels, C.) They can reach a potential worldwide computer viewing audience.

I watched a college bowl game last night on ESPN using my widescreen desktop monitor and cable modem. It was "broadcast quality" but quite enjoyable until they switched to a spelling bee instead of the World Record motorcycle jump. :)

IMO traditional broadcast TV will still be a very powerful force for another 10-15 years but it will continue to see erosion of market-share and no doubt as the user base continues to get fractured, online TV will get a huge boost and continue to get more powerful exponentially as traditional broadcast and cable get weaker.

We know down the road even the traditional powerhouse media companies will only broadcast via IPTV but we are still probably 15-20 years away from the complete death of traditional broadcast TV, but there is no doubt it is coming IMO.

Keep in mind the younger generation of viewers today who watch most of there videos online will be coming of age over the next 10 years. From then on exodus away from tradional broadcast will speed up rapidly.

If you touch my 42" plasma, I will shoot you....

Micro, on your statement........Regular TV is still MANY years away from going away. I would say at least 20. That isn't to mean that there won't be both. It is already happening now, and I expect it to continue for a long time. There will instead just be an increase in who has both for the next 12-15 years, and then going forward a decrease in people who have both to people dropping regular.

Happened the same way with the proliferation of cell phones. There is now a steep decline in people who have land lines, versus those who do, and those that have both.

I'm watching the Rose Bowl on ESPN using IPTV now and the picture is not that bad. There's a LOT (perhaps millions) of people using this technology in China and Taiwan. I think the US is pretty much behind the curve.

Update: The commercials are very strange and I think the signal contains subliminal advertising. A full screen ad just popped up for about 100 Milliseconds that read "Dream Broadcasting System"?

...And don't forget how television forever changed the format of radio. :'( I love OTR, by the way, as it allowed us to use our imagination in ways that tv could not.
