.tv Confused about something

Ok so im a tad bit confused, and I bet someone could probably clear this up in all of 2 mins haha. Underworld.tv is available at name.com for $245, now is this a register of a premium domain name?? How do they work exactly, originally I thought all domain names were up for grabs for normal reg fee and I had this idea about premium domain names and the such but never bothered to research it since its always been out of my price range but this caught my eye and im finally wondering how premium registrations work.

Any help would be appreciated :guilty:

Thanks

... but right now - by and large - generally no one really knows anything about the extension other than a few domainers, IMHO. :red:

People here in Scotland are very familiar with .tv, as they see stv.tv address constantly on the third regular tv channel. Dot tv is not like .mobi or any other extension which is known only to a handful domainers. People take it as an extension for television channels.

Having said that, I do agree that developing .tv names is not an easy task; instead it is a big challenge compared to other extensions, which unfortunately many fail to realise.

It could one day serve a small niche, IMHO. :music:

Thanks kindly,
Jeff B-)

...that small niche of course being called Television. There is more, of course, than the tv media, which the Internet will or should I now say is, converging with...

The .tv extension is in the process of serving a long tail. Whether one prefers to regard this as a niche is of course subject to personal interpretation. Be that as it may the easier access to the Internet via desktop, HDTV, Ipad or whatever is looming in the future only bodes well for .tv. The realignment of Verisign in their pricing structure couldn't have happened at a better time for this expansion of the extension.

Clear road ahead for the .tv extension

I do not consider opinions of the 4 o's(outdated, outmoded, obsolete and just plain old)to hold much water, per se, but it is interesting to see what motivates some to think in that manner.

As for myself,

" .TV - I Like It!"

also, the ".TV" could cease operations altogether at the end of their current contract in 2016, as well. :guilty:
So much uncertainty with the ccTLD ".TV"! :imho:

Hope that helps,
Jeff B-)

And the world is going to end in 2012 so we don't have to worry about nuttin!!....

...oh, you know about that, too?

There's a new underworld film coming out in 2011, would the .tv extension be applicable for a fan site/news site about the underworld films, I also read somewhere that there might be a tv series not sure if that's still true I haven't looked into it deeply yet. Im looking to make a site so I can get a feel for websites, seo and the such, ive only ever worked fully on forums and I want to extend my grasp if you will.

What do you all think?

While I appreciate you requesting advice from people like me, I think the proper question would be...what do you think?

I can tell you many reasons why I feel you can give it a go but the ultimate answer of course will come from you alone. From what you have described you have laid out a really nice set of circumstances that would appear to support your interest in the project you ask opinions for. I support your logical train of thought there.

I don't know if you intend this as a test site or a permanent one. Were you intending to sell this down the road or keep it? Questions you must answer to legitimize your investing the initial premium fee.

As I wished you before, best of luck and fortune.

You know I dont know about anyone else, but its been just 2-3 months since I've started taking interest in domaining and whenever I see a website with streaming content, I look up and see the address automatically and when I don't see a .tv up there I feel that this site is not an exclusive streaming content site and lacks quality. I guess sooner or later ANY streaming media site would have to be a .tv to be considered quality. Dunno if I'm right but thats what I feel.

That's the shift we're hoping for, Orcus. I think we'll see .TV become what .com was in the 90's. With all technologies converging, more and more focus will be put on "live" media.

I think that underworld.tv suits well for your movie... very versatile name - also good for some other 2012+ projects.

The fact that any extension can provide the same data is not lost here.

The fact that the term "tv" is a comfortable fit to the visual experience for the viewer is also well known. It has been branded and positioned in the consumers mind as such for several generations and just is not going away, in fact it is growing stronger with the 21st century technological developments. One will be able to comfortably enter a .tv "channel" on their HDTV and enjoy a multitude of unique and viable offerings of the long tail.

Internet has visitors
HDTV Internet has interactive viewers.

...and .tv will be there, rest assured.

Yeah I really want to start a website so I can suck up as much information as possible and I want to do something im interested in. Just trying to debate whether it would be a wise move buying underworld.tv for the premium price and whether I can afford it or not :P

I would advise not to spend "Premium" $Xxx on the domain name Underworld.TV (or any ".TV's") ... rather, look for comparable, better domain names at Standard $X / $Xx Reg. fee's in established extensions! :talk: :imho:

Good Luck,
Jeff B-)

...a good point is made, but for the fact that the .tv extension is in and of itself established as well and growing exponentially...4 o's rule applies here.

Do not discount his opinion, however, just weigh it.

I would advise you not spend money on a Ferrari because well... you know, a bicycle gets you there too.

The question is whether he wants it and can afford it.

One need not necessarily be an .TV Aficionado to realize that "Underworld.TV" is not a good registration / investment at pure greed "Premium" $245, IMHO.
I'm glad we were of assistance in this bringing this to light!

Just my two sense,
Jeff B-)

Usually you ask "what are the development intentions" ... "what is the purpose" .

NOW, all of a sudden, you are intimately familiar with the OP's level of desire for the name and his intentions are irrelevant. It seems a reasonable name for his DEVELOPMENT intent. You should be happy.

Say my nickname was "Jeff the Concern Troll"... perhaps I would want the premium domain "JeffTheConcernTroll.TV" ... even though in your eyes the $240 would be ridiculous.

Sure. I could look around and maybe settle for "JeffTheTrollIsConcerned.com" and use that and save myself $200 but it's not my nickname... so it just feels.. I don't know. Crap.

That said. As a pure domain and pure value it is overpriced about $200. So your advice has merit in spite of itself

Great quote ThreeD

I would only change 2 words though... "hoping for"

We see it happening right now.
Internet and Tv are becoming one of the same.

So I would only replace those two words with "seeing now".

Alex, That is a great memorable domain and you actually have some great plans for it which truly makes you one step ahead. i think it fits your plans perfectly, and at $20 a year forever after the initial reg, you really cant go wrong.

Good Luck with your decision.

Vito

how much would underworld.com cost?

a pessimist knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

...memorable and quite true!
