Computer.. On or Off??

After a little convo with my friends in chat :tu: I would like to ask you lovely lot...

Do you leave your computer on when you go to sleep/go out or turn it off...

It would be interesting to see how much electric could be saved if we all turned em off..

And if you leave it on.. why ??

Another angle on this one, if you operate a computer with a bootleg operating system, weak anti virus software or security holes in general make sure you turn it off at night or your computer could be taken into someones botnet and doing all types of things while your sleeping without your knowledge.

My laptop gets pretty hot, even with a cooling pad - so if I'm leaving or going to sleep I like it to be turned off. Besides that, it's on NamePros every hour of the day! :tu:

My baby goes to hibernate when I'm sleeping and that's about it. Other than that she is on and ready for me to use

Going off for more than 30 mins - laptop off.
Anything that reduces the electric bill and takes some use off the machine and lengthens its life span.

It's always off for me at night. It's off from 1AM - 9AM usually.

I have a really power-sucking power supply (600W) so any reduction in usage is probably good for the bill .

I use to leave it on 24/7, only turned it off when I wasn't going to be home for days.
However now I turn it off whenever I'm not using it, my attitudes changed.

I'd second that

I think the question is, WHY would you leave it on 24/7 if you're not using it at any point? Surely, you're just wasting your money on unused electricity?

Mine is normally on 24/7.. I think it's been off like twice in the last 3-4 months. One reason I leave it on as I've had power switches go on both my computer and monitor in the past.. best not to wear moving parts :imho:

I only turn my laptop off when im going out with it.

I have wireless broadband, so take my laptop to work sometimes (hope my boss is not reading this!).

Otherwise i use hibernate, although 50% of the time my bluetooth mouse dose not reconnect and i need to restart anyway.

Yep, that's me! Sometimes I keep it on in my dorm room because I have a Ocean sound that I loop on iTunes when I sleep... then one of my room mates has a "storm" on a CD that he loops... so we always have the storm, and sometimes a storm on the beach when we sleep. :D

But anyway, I don't think that the "wear & tear" argument is a very good one, especially for personal computing. It's good for Windows to be rebooted every now & then anyway because of its instability.
