:) After a little convo with my friends in chat :tu: I would like to ask you lovely lot...

Do you leave your computer on when you go to sleep/go out or turn it off...

It would be interesting to see how much electric could be saved if we all turned em off..

And if you leave it on.. why ??

i turn it off. we have high electric bills here compared to other countries.
and to add, this is a hot country anything left on within a day might burn.

My comment on the topic in chat... MM thought I should share with everyone not just those present in the chatroom

I turn mine off, it very rarely turns me on, so why should I let it enjoy itself if Im not? :notme:

Always on (with battery backup).

We were taught to leave the computers on to prevent system board failures. Supposedly, heating and cooling again and again can lead to premature failure of the fragile circuit boards.

Definitely off when sleeping or away, unless I'm only
out for a short time. Don't want to put much wear on
the computer from the start up process.

What's the reason for keeping it on 24/7? Mine's off when I'm not using it. I hate having a higher electric bill than I need to pay, and I'd hate to risk a fire or technical breakdown.

I only shut mine down when I know there is a strom near.

although I do need to contact the electric comapany and see just what my savings will be if I turn if off while not using it.

Who the hell told you that. You should turn your computer off, if not once a day at least once every 2 days, to allow the ever more micro circuits to cool down. Have you ever touched some circuit boards right after turning off the computer? They can get bloody hot!

Just like you need to sleep so do computers need some rest, and that applies to most equipment that heat up.

I used to turn mine off everynight.
Until I kept blowing my power supply...
Now, it never goes off ;)

I rarely ever shut down, it's usually sleep mode so I can start work where I left off the previous night, or just restart after a major installation/update.

Thanks for the responses guys.. This is really interesting as some say .. Its better for your computer to stay on and not be turned on and off and others say its better to let it cool down and also save electric
