:) After a little convo with my friends in chat :tu: I would like to ask you lovely lot...

Do you leave your computer on when you go to sleep/go out or turn it off...

It would be interesting to see how much electric could be saved if we all turned em off..

And if you leave it on.. why ??

I keep mine off when I go to bed/go to work (so 4 days a week). Days that I do not work I leave it on, but I restart it daily.

My PC is 4 years old now, and is doing fine ;)

I've got a 1200w power supply so should really turn mine off but it stays on 24/7 unless we have a power cut or there's storms. If there's storms its best to turn stuff off as power goes on and off and sends surges.

I heard it's better for your laptop battery to take it out when you're using AC power. Makes sense.

Actually I don't understand why not to turn off the computer when you are going out. (maybe laziness)

Yeah I guess thats the reason most leave it on, can't be bothered with the hassle of waiting for it to load up again. I know when I wake up and automatic updates have been done, I'm annoyed because its logged me out
I also leave mine on to do things while I sleep like download or run scripts.

I turn it off when not using it, or if there is an electrical storm - well, ever since a friend of my mum's house was struck by lightning and everything plugged in blew up, that worried me a bit. It starts up in 20-25 seconds, so I don't really worry about time wasted turning it on.

I just let my computer go into sleep mode when I a not using, but now that I think about it maybe I should turn it off more. I got the blue screen of death the other day, maybe that is my laptops way of saying it needs rest too!

Unlike most NP'ers, I have 30 years experience in computers and related Electronic engineering.
So what do I do ??

The correct and best thing for the environment, the computer and it's component circuits.

I TURN IT OFF!

Leaving it on for days on end to supposedly protect some 5cent switch or 5$ chip, is wasteful to the extreme.

Yes thermal shock ,can damage fragile circuits especially CPU's , but is rarely the cause of failures in CPU's. Main problems causing CPU failures is Heat stress and Voltage spikes. CPU's do not like heat, do not Overheat them , Overclocking is MADNESS. If you don't need the computer on ,turn it off, the Power switch is there for a reason.

The best way to ensure your power supply doesn't die is to ensure it has a sufficent rating for your computer. Too many PC's are still equipped with 300W Power Supplies. Add an extra Dvd / HDD to your computer won't stress it much. Add in that latest NvidiATI Super GS1000gts-XIO crossfire VIdeo Card(s) and watch the poor little PS die an early death. A PS with a 500W - 1000W Rating will make it a Happy PC.

Add as many fans to your PC as you can fit. Ensure it is has adequate ventilation. DO not smoke near it. Open case and remove dust, hair and lint at regular intervals.

Fair enough, most of you are domainers with very little technical knowledge of computer circuitry, but common sense should prevail. You do not leave your car running in the Garage, so as to save the ignition switch. You don't leave the stove on, in case your want to cook something. You don't leave the door unlocked when you aren't at home to save you the trouble of unlocking it when you return. The same logical and practical thought process should apply to your computer and whether or not it is turned on.

Well said Barefoottech. Hopefully you will change some NamePro minds. Such a waste of electricity, which in turn is bad for the environment, which in turn is bad for our health, which in turn is .........

Laptops sleeps when I'm not using it, fileserver is on 24/7 and has been for the last 3 years, only time it's rebooted is for kernel updates and to swap in bigger hard drives.

I always have my laptop running 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. I mostly use my battery power during the day and only use AC power to charge it or leave it on during the night and when I am out.

I rarely turn my laptop off. In fact I burn out my laptop about every year and a half or so and have to buy a new one.

You think the global warming problem is from domainers that dont want to wait for their laptops to boot up? lol

I have it on most of the time, so I can quickly get on if I need to do something.

The usual things going on why we leave our computer on hehe, well I don't.. I leave it on if only I'm home even when sleeping but when I go to office I turned it off no one will look after it that's why.
