For some reason *all of the sudden* I haven't been able to access any FTP on any server with any FTP client (SmartFTP is only one of many I have tried using that normally work, and none of them are).

I get errors like this:
---
SmartFTP v1.1.985.6
Resolving host name ftp.******.net...
Connecting to (ftp..******..net) -> IP: **.**.**.*** PORT: 21
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
Active Help Link: http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/index.php/58
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...
---

I'm guessing this could be a firewall problem? But I don't have any firewalls installed (at least I myself have never installed any). All I did was restart my computer and all of the sudden this all started happening.

Oh and finally, no it is not my server. My server is COMPLETELY fine, in fact, I tried logging onto 3 different shared servers and none of them work. I gave the exact FTP details to one of my shared server accounts to a trusty friend and he logged on no problem, so no, the password/username/etc. FTP info isn't wrong either.

Obviousley I can't run a website without FTP.
So now I have had to delay 3 projects I was going to do and discontinue a load more that I was already working on.

Any ideas?

Well, thanks anyways Tom - but I know with all of the data I have on here, a reformat is definitely not an option.

I'm not using any security, I have no security software installed, and I disabled ("unchecked") that automatic firewall box that XP puts on your modems.

I did notice that I have the process "Navapsvc.exe" running. After doing some searching, I found out this process is associated with "Norton AntiVirus" (which I swear to God is not installed on this computer never has been). So I have no idea how/why that process is running.
Anyways, everytime I go in the Task Manager to "Processes", I right click on "Navapsvc.exe" and click "End task", no matter how much I do it - it simply stays there. How can I get rid of this process to *see* if this could be the key to getting my FTP usage back?

I don't have any firewalls running (I mean, that I know of at least - I've never installed any security software of any kind on here). :/

Is there any way to find out if I do have any firewalls running, in the bizarre 3rd world death-defying incident that I actually do?

How come you guys think it might be ad/spyware related?

" No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."

the machine your trying to connect to through ftp refused the connection. ie ftp server crashed, connection was rejected because ftp port was changed.

i doubt its a firewall error.

I ran a search on google with your exact problem. I was able to dig some stuff up. It uses the base port 21. So if for some reason the port #21 is being blocked you are going to have a problem. Let's start with Smart FTP's documentation of this problem at http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/index.php/58
and then work our way from there. Feel free to stop by my site seeing as we specialize in fixing computer errors/problems/and annoyances.
