OK,
Lets say I have a catfood website.
The URL is davescatfood.com
Would there be any benefit to me, search engine wise, to go out and get one of those funky extension domains...
Like catfood.tv for example.
Does the fact that my domain is now a popular search term mean that Google or MSN will favor my site more?

It could be in some cases, but probably not with a .tv extension and probably not in your case, especially if you are selling cat food!

Hmm. As far as I know, that statement is inaccurate. From a search-engine-optimization standpoint, it does not matter what extension you have, as long as your domain is a real domain (not a sub-domain such as catfood.daveshomepage.com). There is some advantage to having a pure keyword in your domain name, but you need to know how to use this to your advantage. The 'how' is a complicated issue, and best learned by reading through many SEO resources.
