What are some of the mistakes some of you domainers have made in the past that you think should be avoided?

I haven't made the mistake, but registering a domain name like microsoft-google.com is pretty stupid or registering any household name.

I'd stay informed about TMs for sure - it's not a big mistake I've made yet but I've mad some choices on names that probably should never have been purchased or registered by me.

I think another one is knowing the value of names and having patience. I've made these mistakes a few times but I am learning from them fairly quickly.

Trusting JUST the overture scores on a domain
Registering my first domains with 1and1.com
Registering any name past 10pm, no matter how good it looked

Best decisions ever made:
Downloading Domain Research Tool
Scouring through all the posts on this forum and reading everyone's mistakes and triumphs so I could learn from the best
Changed my username to regfee.

1/ Assuming that just because you think the name is PREMIUM ,everyone does.
2/ Assuming that just because the name is listed in a dictionary it is a name that will be in demand.
3/ Assuming that just because some name was recently sold for $xxx, xxx and had a couple of letters in common with your name, that yours is worth at least $xx,xxx
4/ Assuming that just because someone said your PREMIUM name is only worth reg-fee,all appraisals are wrong.

IMO, avoid buying a bunch of names in hopes of making reg fee back by parking it at a parking site. Also always do alot of research using sites like Archive.org - Google.com

Expand that to include intoxication, sleep depravity, highness (it's almost 3 AM), or any other time of extreme stress.

A little piece I left out - don't be afraid to use the resources that you have such as NP (which is a wonderful resource). Don't feel like you cannot speak up and ask a question because everyone will think you're a newbie. We all had to start somewhere. I definitely made the mistake while starting out of not asking the necessary questions and using what I had available to the fullest extent.

I agree about intoxication. Domains are just like women, more you drink better they look :)

take time

I would say, dont register your domains in a hurry. Take time. Most of the domains that you find will be available tomorrow as well.
Good luck

But don’t wait to long... I have lost a decent amount of names because I was thinking too long... names which turned out to have value :(

I've come to look at DNs just like a stock/mutual fund/etf, each one is an inve:$: tment, which can rise or fall depending on the market, and in particular- the news, and trends/"buzz". You have to speculate a little, and it WILL cost you more to get "guraunteed", or low-risk returns. You've got to be somewhat diversified, yet not spread too thin, and most importantly, try to stay AHEAD of the trend-line, as far as news and information goes.

My big mistake

Registering domains with a registrar that will not push a sold domain to another account for free. They charge $25 dollars to change a sold domain to the new owner. At the time I registered these domains, I had very limited knowledge of domaining. I have learned a lot with the help of Namepros.

STILL LEARNING-THANKS NAMEPROS!!!!!

next mistake is:
if you see high OVT on some word combination, that does not mean that if you will buy .info or .net you will have nice traffic!

Yeah,
that's why I told it!

Don't let a possible buyer trick you into selling for less than you should. If you have a price in your head that is reasonable in more than just your opinion, you should stand by it. You have a whole year dude.

Don't go for very cheap registrars, and don't sign up for any free domain program. Very cheap domain registration websites can have a catch, like a big renewal fee. Read the fine prints. Do a research on your registrar before purchasing domains from it. Don't set the price of your domain based on appraisals. When in the domain selling business, you must have patience.

Yeah that is something you have to avoid as a domain registra i was with before was 5$ for a domain for a year but when i went to renew it, the price went up to 20$.
