Sorry,
but here is my age old question...

I have a great 2 worder.
I want to buy "one" domain.

The .com version "with" the hyphen (-) is available.
and
The .net version "without" the hyphen is available.

Which do YOU pick???

Here is an example of the domain I want...
Permanent-Scar.com
or
PermanentScar.net

Please do me a favor,
If you stop by this thread, even if you don't Post a reply...
Please Vote on your preference.
A nice bump like...voted, WOULD help though..LOL

I would really appreciate it,
Thanx!

Oh, and by the way,
estibot values the .com w/the hyphen as...
twice as valuable as the .net without the hyphen,
if anyone cares...lol
I found it interesting!

Thanx.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I'll have to pick .NET, hyphens are just too awful. Here's one example that actually happened to me last week:
Someone asked me at the gym where I got my wireless earbuds for my iphone. I told the guy "sleekaudio.com, they rule, you'll love them." He saw me a couple days later and mentioned how he couldn't find the headphones on there, and thought I gave him the wrong site. I googled it up quick on my iphone...they own Sleek-Audio.com! Not SleekAudio.com
Turns out this major company (with an awesome product) doesn't even own their non-hyphen .COM, it's a domainsponsor parked page.
Hyphens are awful!! I agree with dubdub though, find a whole new name in .COM without a hyphen and spare yourself the indignity of .NET :)

Agree with MrSpartan and Gazzip -- would have to know what it's being used for. For SEO purposes, I'd say go with the hyphenated .com, for resale, you'll most likely have much better luck with the .net.

Why? I thought whether or not a domain had a - it would rank the same? And I know for a fact they don't care about extension, so how would free-porn.com be better than freeporn.net?

I voted Net, just buy both of them, and cover your butt.

hyphen for me

Its a hyphenated for me

permanents-car.... if you get the drift. hyphens help define, exactly what you want to be about, and rank as high as any other domain, 1 2 3 word etc,. IMO

I voted for the .net w/out hyphen. The reason being that .nets are easier to remember than .coms with hyphens.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that as far as SEO is concerned it should be just as easy to rank both .coms with hyphens and .nets without. It doesn't matter either way since domain names are just one factor among many in SEO. Other factors like backlinks tend to be more important.

.com with hyphen is best choice ...otherwise two words will mixed with each others..

For me, it really depends on the use. Purely search targeted I'll go for a hyphenated .com, but if there's any hint of using it offline, .net!

I'd buy both, but if I could not, I'd take the COM. I'm not much into NETs.

Wow,

Already 130 votes, and .com w/the hyphen was blowing away .net w/out the hyphen, almost all the way up to 100 votes, then .net took the lead and hasn't looked back!

It is truly amazing how many great domainers have completely different views...

Apparantley there is no right or wrong answer.

Anyone else???

Thanx!

Using a 2 word combination Miami Florida here are the global search volume results
MiamiFlorida returns 590 searches per month
Miami-Florida returns 450,000 searches per month only because the search engines do not recognize the hyphen.
If you want to pick up alot of ads on your site I would go with the hyphened version. If you want to be found quickly then you may want to consider the non hyphen domain, but then you have to rely on brand marketability of the domain name.
If you look at the common word CellPhone the results are more dramatic between cellphone and cell-phone as you are actually picking up both words when using the hyphen and only one when using the condensed version.
You also have to consider the cost to advertise your domain. It will cost more to advertise your hyphen domain because you will have to buy space for both words, but in a true advertising campaign you would want to do that anyway.
type ins will be less for hyphened names, only because the average end user just dosent like them (takes too long to find on a keyboard) but you may be able get more traffic from the search engines with the hyphen.
It all depends on what you want to do with your domain.

I've often debated this myself.

I've come to the conclusion, as others have said. If you are stricly targeting online users, and SE's and other online traffic, I would say the hyphenated.com. However if you are going to be doing alot of radio advertising, tv spots, and trying to bring people online from hearing or seeing an ad whilst going about their day, go with the non-hyphenated.net .
