.Com Owned By Frank Schilling, What Extension to Get?

The .com version of a particular domain I want for a project is owned by Frank Schilling (Name Administration).

The name is not premium, and all the other extensions are still free to register.

My development strategy and branding, however, is very dependent on this domain. I could use another domain but honestly, that just wouldn't cut it.

What would you do in this case. I know that Frank doesn't sell, so it would be futile to approach him with an offer. I could get the .net or .org but then, as a domainer, getting a .net/.org just doesn't feel right.

The website will be related to the movie industry, so do you think it would be appropriate to go with .tv?

I have thought the same thing a number of times and always ended up with one I liked equally as well or even better.

Don't panic and settle for something second rate. If you brainstorm long enough you'll probably come up with something for reg fee.

Since it is going to be related to movies, i think .tv is a far better choice compared to .net, .org etc. If its going to target india or any other country you should pick the cctld in addition to the .tv extension.

.tv has more appeal for a site related with videos compared with .net or any other major tld.

Because you are a domainer and you do not feel right if you use other than com, i suggest you to start only the com.
Don't start if you doubt it. :)
Maybe you can start to find other word combinations which are available on .com :)

These are time when I hate domainers ... :)

Sahar said in a post recently that it is not true that FS will not sell, you could try making him a decent offer.

Hey,

Frank has just begun offering ads on his site.
You may want to contact him about that and perhaps you two
could work out an arrangement.

I've contacted Frank before and did get a reply. It actually shocked the
hell out of me, of course he wasn't interested at the moment.

I think it would be best to contact him with a full plan of action, how you wish
to use the domain along with some proposal that may be beneficial to him as well.

Good Luck!

I would go with the .org if the name HAS to be the one Schilling owns in .com

.org or .tv

If only the .com is regged you may be able to rank well...depends how you plan to make money with it

Well, you know how domainers are. If they know that a .org or .net of their .com is being developed, then they are more likely to get excited about all the extra traffic their site is going to get.

Unless you have an awesome offer, I would rather not contact him if I were you.

Sending Frank an offer doesn't sound like an option. I'm in no mood to pluck down $10k for a domain that's not worth $50 to a reseller, and $500 tops to an end user.

I'll either go with the .tv, I'll just have to go with another name.

Don't you hate it when you have to go with plan B?

Yeah it doesn't seem like there'd be much point, although who knows? If it truly doesn't have much value, try sending an offer? He may have it on his "don't renew" list (if he has such a one ;)) and so may welcome an offer. It's doubtful, but it's not the case that because he's rich you cannot approach him with anything but an overly inflated price.

You are the end user, it's worth what you're willing to pay.

Go with .in, if not the .net - .org is for non-profits, unless its a free service I avoid using .org

.in has more credibility on a larger portion of the market than .tv imho.

Plus its not 'limited' to an av approach.

Frank will appreciate the traffic you generate for him.

I like the .in, obviously, but it somehow constrains the website scope.

Anyway, I've got another domain. Its a compromise, but then, better than getting something in a non .com extension.

This thread makes me sad, it's everything that's wrong with the domain industry, people find their favourite extension then claim everything else is crap, just to boost the pricing of their own domains.
