Ok silly newbie question here but .... in search engine results if someone where to type in say, poker would the .com result show before the .net? and if not why is the .net cheeper?

It doesnt have any pref. over .net
Its all the search engine rankings like page ranks.
and major registrars charge .com,.net and .orall same prices

I guess also the chance of getting the repeat user comes in here for most sites. Every average Joe that hasn't been living in a cave the past few years knows what a .com is and every time he needs something or wants to visit a site, www.______.com is typed in. .com is more familiar than a .net so there you go. Old habits die hard. Specifically addressing search engines, though, yes a .net is just as good if not better when you consider price.

This is one reason I am asking when I am searching for something I never put .com I just put the name and see what comes up :D
