I believe the new registry agreement and amendment "allows" Verisign to increase prices as follows which is quoted from the .com registry agreement.
(d)Maximum Price. The Maximum Price for Registry Services subject to this
Paragraph 7.3 shall be as follows:
(i)from the Effective Date through 31 December 2006, US$6.00;
(ii)for each calendar year beginning with 1 January 2007, the smaller of the
preceding year's Maximum Price or the highest price charged during the
preceding year, multiplied by 1.07; provided, however, that such increases shall
only be permitted in four years of any six year term of the Agreement. In any year, however, where a price increase does not occur, Registry Operator shall be entitled to increase the Maximum Price by an amount sufficient to cover any additional incremental costs incurred during the term of the Agreement due to the imposition of any new Consensus Policy or documented extraordinary expense resulting from an attack or threat of attack on the Security or Stability of the DNS, not to exceed the smaller of the preceding year's Maximum Price or the highest price charged during the preceding year, multiplied by 1.07.

therefore, Verisign can raise prices as much as 7% per year. This doesn't mean they will, it jsut means than can. However, the registrars have no price controls and really never have.

And technically, this is an increase to the cost of making the registry entry to registrars, not us. Although it is most likely that they will increase the prices in line with this instead of absorbing the costs themselves...

The history of the internet show us that prices went down in all fields.
Domain names acted the same.
I believe that it'll go down and one day they'll be free + cost of services around it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

All the above will be changed when the the dot .wow would come and the cost of it $1k per domain... :)

Thanks Adoptable, I should have clarified in my first post the 7% possible increase, but I was too lazy to go into details. My bad.

actually there is potentially another increase that could come as soon as July 1. According to the .com registry agreement, the ICANN fee on domains charged to the registrars goes from $.37 to $.45 on July 1, 2006. Then to $.50 on July 1, 2007. Not a huge increase, but some registrars may pass it on.
