NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- An energy drink called Cocaine has been pulled from stores nationwide amid concerns about its name, the company that produces it said Monday.

Clegg Ivey, a partner in Redux Beverages LLC of Las Vegas, Nevada, said the company plans to sell the drink under a new name for now.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter last month that said Redux was illegally marketing the drink as a street drug alternative and a dietary supplement. May 4 was the deadline for the company to respond.

The FDA cited as evidence the drink's labeling and Web site, which included the statements "Speed in a Can," "Liquid Cocaine" and "Cocaine -- Instant Rush." The company says Cocaine contains no drugs and is marketed as an energy drink. It has been sold since last August in at least a dozen states.

"Of course, we intended for Cocaine energy drink to be a legal alternative the same way that celibacy is an alternative to premarital sex," Ivey said. "It's not the same thing and no one thinks it is. Our product doesn't have any cocaine in it. No one thinks that it does. We think it is most likely legal in the United States to ship our product."

Ivey said the FDA did not order the company to stop marketing the drink, but officials were concerned about possible legal action. They will announce a new name within a week and hope to have the product back on store shelves within a few weeks.

Looks like I'll have to snag the empty can from work and put it on eBay.. I saw this coming but was never able to get ahold of any to put away for the "college fund".. a collector's item now!

Well if you do sell that, make sure the can doesn't have any dents or crumples in it, and in a few years you'll make tons from it!haha but really why would a company even call their drink that? Couldn't they see this coming right from the start?

Their website has a blurb that states there might have been some potential issues with the Coca Cola company over TM issues.. I'm more inclined to think retreat was the better part of valor.

I'm surprised they didn't just call it Meth.. seems to be the thing of choice in my area ;)

I think they called it cocaine because meth would jsut be to obvious of who it's trying to attract, although it already ios qutie obvious lol. Oh well, i guess we'll jsut wait and see what it is officially renamed as.

they were trying to ban it in chicago as well, I had a few of them already and got a few full ones in the fridge, 3x the caffeine as a red bull but makes your throat numb which is weird, I prefer monster.

Good marketing ploy lol.
Can you see a restaurant with cocaine on the menu? Or business
men with a can of cocaine at a meeting, or some parent buying their kid a can of cocaine.
Who are they targeting?
If they put the same professional thought into product development I am sure it tastes
like cow droppings
