What is process for closing an auction at Namepros?
Do I just close the thread>

Change the title: Closed
Close the thread

Should I changed the subject line to closed first and announce the winner before closing the thread?

Yes, announce the winner. Close the thread but leave the title as is until transaction is successfully finished. After, change the title and subject to Sold or Closed
